Stainless barrels

How about the "hunter orange" cap and vest...? :D
I think it's not as big a deal with bigger game, from what I've heard. Others more qualified than I am are sure to chime in. Maybe there's something to it.
Ducks and geese are another story - very good eyesight and easily spooked.

I have matte finished stainless barrels on several of my hunting rifles, and have NEVER seemed to have a problem, scent and movement are more likely to be a factor than even a slight glint of a barrel or scope.
I suppose if 1 were still enough for awhile, magpies and crows could be an issue

I have a bead blasted dull finish on my 6.5 Panther, and there is no way it will spook game.

The barrel on my 25-284 on the other hand is shiny stainless, and when the sun is shining on it, it does reflect light, which could spook game. Havent hunted with it enough in bright conditions to have noticed it yet though

Most of the stainless barrels that I've seen are more of a matte grey in color and aren't shiny at all. I prefer a matte black scope on a stainless barrel rather than a stainless scope.... for some reason I just don't like the look of a silver scope.

I had an elk spook this year because of the barrel on my BDL s/s 338.

Its not a matter of just reflection, its a matter of blending in to the surrounding environment. The ss barrels stick out like a sore thumb during some times of the year
I feel in the snow they are fine, but spring summer and some fall months there is too much contrast, and they can see that.

I was in head to toe camo behind a tree and the wind in my favor my brother was about 30 yard behind me. Head to toe camo as well. We were in thick bush and the damn thing spooked.

I said to my brother what the HELL, he said that he couldn't see me but he could see the barrel on my rifle moving around plain as day and that was in the thick bush to boot. And if my brother could see the barrel then the elk could definitly see it too.

I'll still use stainless rifles, I just might cover the barrels with something if doing some intense stalking.

Just my experience though:cool:

I have primed barrels with zinc chromate and then painted them flat black. Get yourself two spray bombs at CT and go.

If/when the paint gets scratched, just give it another two shots and go again.

i have always thought that gloss black and stainless are for pimps, but if thats your deal whatever. i think you can screw up hunting in a million other ways before the glare/flash off your rifle is a factor. the glass on a riflescope will glint in the right light as well as your eye glasses, watch crystal, binos.....i could go on and on. if you are that worried about it make yourself a guille suit for your gun. army guys have been doing it since 1914 and they are hunting on a two way range.:)
