Here`s an Email I just got from a buddy , Now I am curious. Can anyone here help with some answers?

By the way I’m looking at a m1 carbine (18.5”) all stainless with a black (seems to be painted)wooden stock, Winchester stamped on the breech and general motors stamped just below the front sight. The guy says it is from ww2 but I can’t find anything regards to SS m1 carbines made during ww2 ! I was wondering if you could contact your gun nut buddies and see if there is any info. on stainless steel m1 carbines other than what I mentioned !! “ANY HELP MUCH APPRECIATED”,
Thanks in advance

Well its got a non restricted barrel on it, because my GM stamped M1 Carbine barrel is only 18" and its WW2 dated to 1944. Sounds like a hodge podge.

No such thing as an issue SS M-1 Carbine. Universal Firearms Corp. made one in 1982 though. Called it Model 1006. Junk, late model Universal.
General Motors wouldn't ever be stamped anywhere either. Even though Carbines were made by GM divisions.
Like wannabe says, it's been painted or whatever. No collector value at all. Your buddy have an RPAL?

From your description, it sounds like a Winchester M1 carbine that needs to be refinished/re-parkerized. Worst case you might need to replace the stock. Most carbines in service were at one point overhauled, re-parkerized, had parts replaced or upgraded with newer specification parts, etc. by army armorers before eventually being gifted to some third world country and eventually surplussed. They aren't serialized to the gun, so if you find an original USGI part, it will still probably seem "original" as far as anyone knows.
Buddy might want to confirm the actual rifled barrel length and registration status before taking possession of it. There was a point where many M1's were "de-registered" with barrel extensions attached ahead of the front sight, but then they changed the rule on barrel extensions in the 1990's. Some owners may have missed all that and not be aware that they are restricted.

Yup RobertMcC is correct. Straight out of the M1 Carbine Comprehensive Guide it states: "Except for some late production 1945 barrels, all Inland barrels were dated and were marked "INLAND MFG. DIV. - GENERAL MOTORS"" Later barrels were stamped the same but without the date.

Even went down and checked one of my carbines (Inland). 'General Motors' on the barrel as well.

Gee Sunray....I thought you were better than that ;)

The receiver is stamped Winchester with a barrel stamped General Motors. Does that mean the barrel has been changed?

Winchester used their own barrels. Early barrels were stamped WRA. Later Winchester barrels had a 'W' with a 'P' above it, both inside an oval.

If it goes bang every time and can be had cheap enough it would be a good candidate for NR barrel replacement. Stocks can be found on eBay for cheap. Maybe it's the pic but the barrel/front site and stock look to be the only things facked

My understanding is that you are not allowed to export M1 carbine parts from the states........Ebay or otherwise. Of course if you can find a stock on Ebay here in Canada or internationally then no problem but I haven't see to many.
