Me likey the Ruger.

As well as throwing in scope rings, I found out that Ruger makes the stainless in left hand as well. Got me a 30-06 and instead of the crappy tupperware stock showing in the catalog it came with a fairly nice grey lam stock. Keeper!

Stainless Sako's

I was at P&D in Edmonton on saturday and they have several Sako Stainless 85 models on sale, 2 260 Rem, 243, 270 win, and there is a used 260 sako with a Zeiss 4-14 for $1699 the scope is worth almost $950.00. FS

My first Savage was a 116 stainless, great sloppy weather gun but none are maintenance free.

I've got a mod.16 (short action). I agree, it's a great sloppy weather gun and requires "minimal" maintenance. But, since I like taking my guns apart, might as well clean and oil at the same time ;)

Hey for all you Savage fans out there;

WSS has a sale on a few remaining 16FSS & 116FSS some are $399 and the 06 is $449 Standard Trigger, not Accu-Trigger.

Damn, it's tempting. Did I just say that.

True, and yes I do like the Rugers, but I do have some Leupold rings and bases already for a Savage (110LA & 116LA are probably not different for bases I would think?).

Besides I did call WSS today to clarify the barrel length, and I got some girl on the phone who couldn't even find the item on their computer, let alone didn't even know what I was referring to, and when I asked to speak to someone on the floor/gun section to ask some questions, she told me to call back at a different #. Now that's class ass service. lol She did take my name and number and that someone might call me back the next day.
No sale from me today, there might have been a sale today if they could get their act together. I guess it's not meant to be.

Now here's a question, how difficult is it to add some open sights to a Stainless Barrel, someone mentioned the use of epoxy to me.

Hey there Manbearpig, where did you find that $599.00 price for the Ruger Hawkeye?

I'd be more liekly to sell the rings and buy the Ruger, if a solid, dependable hunting rifle is what you want.

Savages arent' my idea of a rifle I'd want to take on a rugged hunt. :)

Was just reading an article in Rifle magazine recently all about soldering. News to me there is a type of solder for stainless steel now. How ever done it shouldn't be much trouble for a smith to add some sites to a Ruger if you wish and wouldn't be too costly. I doubt if you'd ever get a chance to try them tho cause the Ruger ring system is about bomb proof!

the only thing that matters for bases on Savages - AFAIK - is the round or flat rear receiver. i think all the newer ones have round rear receivers.

on my Savage im going to try a little different solution for sights, since i dont want to permanently modify the barrel or do any gunsmithing and id like a solution that can be transferred to another rifle later on (at least one with a similar contour barrel).

im going to either buy, modify or manufacture a low AR-style clamp-on front sight base, and use a rear weaver-mount ghost-ring type sight. the front sight will stay on tight with blue loc-tite, and the rear site can be removed or installed in a minute since i have a quick-release scope on the rifle. this way i dont have to deal with crappy aftermarket V-notch sights, its fully customizable, and can be installed and removed without any permanent modification.

**edit
the entire sight system will be a little bit higher than factory or dovetail/receiver mount sights but i dont foresee this being much of a problem since these modern rifles all have higher combs designed for use with scopes anyways, and the sights will still be much lower than a scope.

Not true, mounting holes can have different spacing also depending on year of manufacture and of course if it's one piece base then long or short action.
