stalked by coyotes?

Being predators, they're naturally curious about whether something can offer food. Someone may have tossed them scraps before, or they have associated a human with the availability of food (garbage, pets, etc). Foxes will sometimes do the same, but almost no one would consider a fox a predatory threat. I wouldn't suggest screaming and running away, or laying down and cowering in fear, but for the most part you have little to worry about.

I have heard of several hunters here that have been stalked by them in the dark. In subdivisions they seem particularly brazen as they know they are safe ( i'd still shoot!) There is a woman with a horse farm near here who was looking for help as they were trotting alongside her as she drove in her gator.

For some reason they avoid me like I'm satan himself, I guess they are smart!

Id shoot them but that's just me I don't care about light when being stalked its defense. for you guys in city's and subdivisions look into the bylaws and see what they say about bows here in Windsor they have nothing about bows or crossbows so I use them to hunt farms within the city limits

They get brave when their numbers are up. The old man shot one in the farmyard Saturday, when he stepped out onto the porch with a 30-30 it just stared at him. Big mistake. Last year a group of them tried to bait the dog into leaving the yard repeatedly as well, led by a large Alpha type yote. It took a couple months, but he nailed that one too and the night time visits ceased. If there's too many in your area, shoot and hunt the buggers. They need to have a healthy fear of people.
My uncle and one of my buddies have both been followed by them as well, and shot on sight.

Not sure it was a coyote but something was circling around as I gutted my deer last weekend. I was in the trees and couldn't get a look at it. Took a little longer to gut it than it should of, I kept looking around. Never had that happen before kinda creepy.

I had a pair of big yotes parallel me and my beagle about 15 yrs ago in a rural/natural park in north Whitby.
My beagle alerted me to them..they were a ways off..but big and were walking along a hillside to the west of the park trail and they were keeping an eye on us...prob wanted my small beagle as dinner...but ya it was creepy.. Having a firearm would have made me feel a lot safer..

I love dogs....mans best friend for good reason..but these buggers...no time for them

I get laughed at by my hunting buddies as I a keep a very large SOG knife handy when in the woods. They aren't laughing anymore :)

As far as I am concerned your knife is your best friend and I don't mean your skinning knife. My bolo knife saved my butt from a strangely large coy dog with rabies.

It's perfectly legal to fire guns after sunset where allowed. It is not legal to hunt after sunset.

Well, truth be told, its also perfectly legal to hunt after sunset where allowed. :p

For example, in this province we get a half hour after sunset. From our regs:

Hunting at night
42. (1) A person shall not make use of or take advantage of any artificial light or device involving the use of artificial light to hunt, take or kill any game.
(2) A person shall not hunt, take or kill big game during the period commencing one-half hour after sunset on any day ending and ending one-half hour before sunrise on the day next following.

There's a loophole here, btw. Perhaps someone can spot it. :yingyang:

I had a similar experience a few years ago. I was coming outta the woods on a old woods path, around 6-7 miles from the nearest house, in the semi- dark and there was movement to my left and also behind me. I never had a firearm, as it wasn't hunting season, all I had was my Leatherman Blast. Well, let me tell ya, I found a dry, thick tree limb and I sharpened it to a pretty sharp point in seconds flat. I let out a few bawls to let whatever it was know I was a human, and I kept going. I made it to the car and it felt like the most dangerous time was putting the key in the door to open the lock. The place is known to have plenty of yotes and I've never went back there since. It raised the hair on my neck and I can tell ya that it feels pretty scary to be stalked. By the way, I still have the pointy stick, I use it to stir the fire barrel.

On several occasions I've been stalked by coyotes. This summer I went snorkeling and the tide came in far so I had to climb up a cliff and walk back through a corn field, I counted six following me but I know there were more, I was some happy to have my lab and dive knife with me as a bit of security. There are three separate packs within 2kms of my house, if I take the dog out for a walk in the evening or at night I always have a rifle with me just in case.

You can hunt small game at night as long as you don't use a light?

Was training in Valacartier one time in the army, and it was about 2am and we were manning an observation post. We heard rustling around us and coyotes howling. Our crew commander told us to get our bayonets out. We had no ammo. Nothing came of it and I think the sound of blank ammo in the distance scared them off. Their howls were pretty close though and we couldn't see anything on the NODLR or NVGs.

Yep, and coyotes too. (I have a feeling that you would be charged with hunting big game if you tried it, so probably not a loophole you'd want to test, but its there nonetheless).

Four years ago while I was working for encore coding and drilling, I was on the next lease by myself, digging the cellar in the middle of the night lot by the headlights of my drillers crewcab. I could still see my rig, it was less than a mile away. I had the satellite radio blaring, helmet off enjoying the break from the rig. (Only on a fast hole rig is digging a hole considered a break.) Out of the corner of my eye I caught movement, and looked up and saw a coyote. When I looked directly at him, he froze. I thought "neat!" And took a picture with my phone. He took off. A few minutes later, I turned and saw him in my peripheral, this time much closer, and low. Only 15 m from my now waist deep hole. Kinda creeped, I yelled at him, and scared him off by getting out of my hole. This repeated itself over the next hour, several times. Finally after getting creeped that this stupid animal was trying to catch me in the hole, I jumped into the dodge 2500, and tried to run him down. I had to stop chasing him, because he left the lease site. It was a zero disturbance environment, so even tire tracks would get me in doo doo. This was east of Medicine Hat, before oyen.

After that I went back and finished my hole with the radio and the truck off, I ripped back to the rig. Where I had to answer questions about why the Derrick hand had seen headlights tearing around the new lease. Weirdest thing.
