Standard/Magnum Primers?

This is why I asked the question, running low on Federal 210's. I did purchase 400 large rifle Bosnian primers from the nice gentleman who ownes Budget Shooters Supply. I could of purchased more however, I heard that it is hit and miss with these primers plus, they are more difficult to seat in the primer pocket.

My 240 Wby., 270 Win. and 30-06 are just at max load and hesitant of compromising the loads and rifles. The easy fix is to locate Fed. 210's however, they are rediculously overpriced from greedflation sellers.

Pmed you.

So,would 1 or 2 grains of powder cause enough trouble to be worried over?

Half a grain could cause a "kaboom" if you are already at the pressure Max... if you are at a middle range load, it will change the velocity and POI but won't necessarily do damage to brass, or rifle or your melon.

I am just getting back into shooting my rifles after converting to mostly bow hunting. You guys are talking like you can find LR and LRM primers. I have bullets, powder, and brass but I cannot seem to find primers to save my life. Are you ordering them in to your LGS?

As far as I read or heard, most standard primers sold are Ginex, manufacture in Bosnia. There are Federal and CCI readly available however, be prepared to pay a greedflation price. A brick for 1000 primers is priced between $450 to $1,000. Read this post with a friend so they can apply the two defibrillator paddles.

Yes, but book data is usually about 10% less than actual sammi psi.
My 7 mm rem mag is good for 61000 psi ,according to sammi but max published loads brings me to mid 50000 , so that should leave a bit of room for error?
I guess this might all change with different powders?
So unless you are already loading hotter than published max loads a grain or two should be fine . No?

I didn't say at MAX in the "manuals," I said at the pressure max... there is a tipping point, where in one squeeze the world is a beautiful place and on the next squeeze, your ears are ringing, you are seeing black, then stars, then flashing lights, all while your index finger is doing it's best Hamburger impression.

lol , been through an OOB kaboom, it happens so quickly

I'm just checking to see how many guys use magnum primers in standard cartridges, ie: 243 on up to 30-06. Any difference in accuracy or pressure?

I use magnum primers whenever I'm loading more than 60 grains of powder (30-06 with 180gr bullets and 4831 for example). So far so good as far as accuracy and pressure goes. My '06 has a 24" barrel though. In a 20" this would be impractical and would leave a lot of unburned powder. For a rifle like that, I would use a slightly faster powder and a regular primer.

A lot of people are just loading and shooting out of their own stashes, hoards or inventory. ( pick a word) Guys have been burnt before, and vowed it would never happen again. They’re not the ones bidding up prices, they bought their stuff cheap in times of plenty.
This isn’tt the first component shortage but its the worst one I’ve ever seen by far.

I have always used large rifle primers for regular cartridges and magnum for magnum cartridges using more than 60 grains of powder, and as listed in the reloading manuals. I know people use magnum primers in non-magnum cases and vice versa, but I never have, nor been tempted to try, as I have both on hand and haven't felt compelled to try otherwise.

I only rifle I tried both in was. Tikka 6.5 PRC , which called for magnum primers.
But I found the standard LRP was just a little bit more accurate, on paper.

Well, I took the plunge and purchased 1,000 RWS Standard Large Rifle primers from a gun store in Saskatoon. They are the least expensive price in Canada and of great quality. Federal 210 primers are my favorite however, difficult to find, and when found, insanely expensive.
