Standard vs Production vs Open

Hello,

I got into IPSC and have a couple friends willing to lend me their spare guns long term.

My options are

-Czechmate, but I have to buy all his old equipment as well, it's a pretty penny, wouldnt be easy, but a solid deal. Not sure I'll get the S/O on board.

-Shadow 2

-And a CZ TS2 9mm

I dont think many people here in NL shoot in Open, if any, and Standard is all major for the shooters I've seen which it looks like I can't do with the TS2 unless I were to load some really hot ammo. So is my only option to compete with others on a regional level to get the Shadow? Is the Open class something I should really try and make happen?

Shoot production. If you’re not super familiar with handguns, it’ll do you best to begin no optics and really get a feel going!

I’d also go Shadow 2. Get an optic on it once you’re familiar with how to run it 👍

Thanks! I have been performing above average, just below the career shooters. I can shoot alphas and run them gun decently fast, so id id say I'm proficient. So would you still probably go for production? And I guess the TS2 is just not right for IPSC in 9mm

Use the Shadow2 - it's an awesome Production gun. If you were really proficient, you wouldn't be talking about running really hot ammo in the TS2, just shoot minor.

This is accurate, I shoot with people who shoot 9mm in Standard and they are limited to minor power factor which puts them at a disadvantage against the .40 folks but if you only shoot Alphas it dont matter as they are scored the same either way....... :D

I agree that Production is a good place to start.

I really feel like I missed out on getting an Open gun. Looked at a few but couldn't find "The One". I did pick up 3 pistols (including something high end) before King Turdhole froze everything to save the world

Even now the mere thought of that 'tard puts me in a foul mood.

Sounds like you are well on your way but Production is a pretty wide category and the people placing at the top of Production in my area place very near the top overall in matches despite their seeming equipment shortcomings relative to the Open guns.

It seems Open guns are much more fickle when it comes to keeping them running than Production guns. By contrast they don't need much attention at all beyond routine cleaning and lubing.

That's a good point. Thank you. Alphas don't seem to be a problem. Probably not worth the trouble to go up to major. Considering that, I'm wondering if I should maybe consider the TS2.

What made you want to get into open?

Thank you. Yes I've noticed that some open shooters could make improvements aside from the gun. So in your opinion, spending an extra 6k may mot even be worth it performance-wise.

There is no doubt that all other things being equal (ie both running right and in the hands of equal shooters familiar with their equipment) the Open gun provides an advantage but I do believe it is a law of diminishing returns.

Personally, I know there is much more performance to be found in me before I require better equipment (but it doesn't stop me always picking up cooler gear :D )

Not super familiar with the TS2 - are they 9mm or .40?

If it is 9mm I would definitely go with the Shadow 2 - gives more options.

Open guns are the Formula One of pistols - that is the attraction. Production is like driving a fast road car. Both are good, but one is just more extreme / better.

I am a reasonable pistol shooter but honestly it is my weakest discipline - long guns feel much more natural to me and my results reflect that.
