Hi,

I recently bought the Star Mod B pistol, the one that Star made during WW2 but was captured by the Russians. I took it out to the range and on the 4th mag the mag release came apart! It is a 2 piece assembly with a spring in the middle. It looks like it is supposed to screw together but I think the threads are faulty because I can simply push the assembly together (but obviously it doesn't stay that way.)

This is the mag release that does not have a screwdriver slot. Has anyone heard of this problem? Should I try and search for an old or new replacement that fits or should I Loctite it?

,Jason

if it is like my model BM.. it pushes together and then screw turns halfway to lock in?? IIRC,... its been a while :)

Hi, thanks for the link. I know how to unscrew the mag release and put it back together. But the problem is that it will not stay together. I can actually push the two pieces together but then when you try to tighten it it will only do so like 1/16th of a turn!
I am not sure whether I should clamp them together somehow or find a new mag release.

After watching the video section on taking out the mag release, it is obviously different than a 1911.
I would suggest that perhaps the threading on yours has been messed up, possibly cross threaded at some point.
When the assembly is out of the frame, can you thread the button ( left side ) into the right side several turns ?

Are there any businesses that if I send them the whole mag release assembly, can then remanufacture a new one? I have pretty much given up on this. It's a gun only made for a few years, during WW2, by an out of business company. Shoulda known! lol

Barry Jensen, the gunsmith who owns Bits of Pieces in Delta, BC, can make anything. He has fabricated small replacement parts for obsolete firearms for me and many others. Of course you have to decide whether it's worth the cost for that firearm. He's also good at mending what's already there.

This is the problem Loctite thread locker was made to solve. Wash both sides with acetone to get rid of any oil or grease, apply red Loctite and screw together or press fit to its functional dimension, and clamp while the thread locker cures. I have similar parts that have been held by Loctite for 40 years. The cost of doing this repair (carefully) yourself will be about a quarter of the postage to a gunsmith. That’s if you buy the acetone and clamp as well.
