Star Pistol Model 9, WWII German issue 1942-1944

Great news, Lever got my gun back and sent me pics of two potential replacement pistols, both of which were, IMHO, a good bit better looking. This is the one I have on the way.

It has nice clear markings on the slide, serrations are crisp and if the slide was buffed, they at least retained the sharp edges. Some of the lower bits (trigger and pins) are still strawed. Interestingly, it has bakelite grips - something I hadn't seen on this import batch yet, but apparently some of this import is bakelite-gripped. Both replacement choices I was offered were wearing bakelite. I assume that at least one Bulgarian Contract delivery must have come with these grips on them (?) then.

Better review to follow when I get the pistol in. Like virtually all these, though, some parts look to be re-numbred on a smaller-than-original font. I sure wish a local dealer of dealer that posts pics of each gun (like P&S) had these. I'm not a fan of ordering without seeing what I'm buying ;)

Got mine today and I'm actually pretty satisfied. I asked for and received one with clear slide markings, and it's got quite a decent bore as a bonus. The grips are a little darker / more oil stained than some posted here, but for the price I'm very happy with it.

That one's not bad. I think if you used a soft toothbrush to scrub those grips with acetone, they would likely come up OK. I kind of wish my replacement gun had wood grips, but oh well.

Hey guys,

Quick question, but on your Star pistols, does the lanyard ring stud rotate? Mine does not, and is in a less than ideal position that guarantees the lanyard loop is digging into my hand (see pics). Before I try to force it, I'd like to confirm it CAN turn (or not).

I figured it out. It was seized with dried grease and I had to REALLY come onto it in the smooth-jaw vise, but they are screwed in, normal RH thread. I backed mine out 1/4 turn and problem solved.

I AM cheating on the cleanup though. I'll be removing the bluing from the barrel and extractor. My lower is not refinished as far as I can tell and lots of original color case on the internal parts, but the upper is hot-dipped. I want it to look like it did when new - bbl and extractor in the white. Should look great.

Yeah, yeah... I'm a bubba.

Took mine out shooting yesterday. Only got 50 rounds through it though. One of the mags was excellent, the other one didn't like being topped up to 8 and would try to puke too much ammo into the breach after the first shot. Had two, maybe a third, FTE which might be a worn extractor but not sure. Could have been the bad mag causing issues. Will need to shoot some more to sort it out. All in all wasn't too bad of an experience, especially given a 70 year old gun that had been thrown back together by the Russians.

Got mine cleaned up. I REALLY like it a lot better with extractor and bbl in the white. Gun is from the 9/10/43 Bulgarian Contract, near the tail end of it that delivery. So not nazi, but definitely WW2 Axis weaponry.

I cycled dummy rounds through both mags - fed just fine.

I did have to make one new grip screw. If you look at the bottom grip screw in this photo, it was the wrong diameter and stripped (frame was OK). I just made a new one on the lathe - turned out great.

This is how it turned out. The roll stamp looks great, but after I oiled it, it didn't photograph well. It looks better in the pics in my last post.

Bbl & extractor in the white like when the pistol was new:

Some kind of cancelled rack number (?):

Overall:

Muzzle in the white, pretty decent bore:

Serial number on frame:

'43 production. Trigger is in the white (strewed) and the trigger bar under the grips is color case hardened, all the pins are in the white. I don't think the lower was re-blued, though the slide definitely was.

Better pic of roll stamp from before I oiled the slide:

VERY happy with this gun - huge Thank You and shout-out to Lever Arms for selecting me this example.

Hmm... After this thread being open for a good while, I'm disappointed and surprised more ppl are not posting pics of finds.... Or alternately, are these not selling?

Better guns than a norinco 9mm 1911 IMHO.

Seriously though, the Star is a better made and (usually) better shooting 9mm than the Norinco. The Norinco has a forged frame and slide, but so does the Star. Fit and finish on the Star will be better if you select a nice one. Price is about the same, maybe a little cheaper for the Star.

To me, it's a no brainer.

Plus they are captured axis WW2 guns, which is just plain cool.

I was really hoping to resist the temptation to get one of these, but I don't know how much longer I can hold out!

Not this particular version but I've owned a couple different Star model B's in the past. Very good shooters, too.

In fact the first one I had would shoot circles around a Colt Govt model 9mm pistol I also owned at the time.

Here's pics of the second one I had:

When I got it the grips were pooched so I ordered a new set from Numrich. I had to finish them myself as they arrived unfinished bare wood.

Later sold it in the EE. Still have a Star pistol but it's the "BM" 'compact' model.

Great shooter but unfortunately a 12(6):

Go for it, you likely won't regret it.
