Agree, its a smoke discharger. Unfortunately with the current laws, a functioning one would be called a "short barreled rifle" and illegal.
I just can't see paying that amount of money for a paperweight.

Possibly, or the studio could buy the guns cheap to convert for Star Wars at the time. Because most of these guns were "barrel" guns then!

Or George just wasnt creative and got his ideas from watching WW2 movies.

It's not a smoke discharger, it's the standard grenade cup for the mills bomb that went on the #1mk3.
I have the smoke discharger....it was a 4" diameter piece of tube that the Ross or Enfield action screwed right on to.
