Has anyone out there ever seen a Starr Rifle? I picked one up in .45-60 Caliber with 32" round barrel. The gun is excellent condition with a good bore and tight action. It looks like it was built on the Carbine action a long time ago. Top of the barrel is marked G.D. Booth, Ottawa Ont.

I have seen a couple of Star rifles but the G.D Booth is intersting as he was a Canadian gunsmith up to around the mid 1880's, I will have to look up the dates for sure.
I have a couple of Remingtion's with his name on them, the Hepburn has the Reminton name taken out of the barrel and a brass insert with his name on it and the rolling block has been made up I think by him as a long range rifle but it looks like a shotgun action to start with and his name is stamped on the barrel

Looks like a Starr percussion carbine converted to CF. Starr Arms Co , Yonkers NY,delivered 20601 carbines to US Govt 1863-64.Arm was redesigned to use RF ammo in 1865 and 5000 more were made.
 
Guilford D booth was a gunsmith in Kirks Ferry and Ottawa 1857-79.
Patented a BL dropping block pin fire rifle c1868.
 
Starr Carbines in Canada

There were some Starr Carbines purchased by the Canadian Government not sure if these were surplus guns sold off by the US government after the Civil War. I do not have access to my library right now since I am not at home but I remember that these carbines were already converted to shoot Rimfire rounds. So this rifle could be one of these that passed into private ownership and was reworked to a more usable calibre.

Road King, your rifle is a conversion of a percussion Starr.
The Canadian ones were new manufacture RF 56-50 cal M1865 purchased by Britain from the Starr Co.and transferred to Canada.
 
You are right it is a conversion from a percussion carbine. It has been been converted as a rifle likely for target shooting. By the looks of the work that was done on this conversion G.D. Booth was a fine gunsmith. I would be interested in seeing photos of any other guns that were made by him if anyone has any.
