The book Johnson Rifles and Machine Guns by Bruce Canfield is a real eyeopener about the politics and controversey involving the two rifles, Johnson and Garand.
One thing that is certain, the Johnson had many features that put it way ahead of it's time, and those features are still used today.
 
It would seem that it was bad timing on Col. Johnson...the Garand was in development since the early 1930's...and with the depression and the political climate in the U.S....not a lot of enthusiasum for a another new rifle....it was too bad...the Johnson with a bit more refinement would have been a winner
