starter hand gun

If you have little handgun shooting experience, it could be easier to master fundamentals with a .22. Ammunition cost is substantially lower. Might not be a bad idea to make contact with a local club, and perhaps try different pistols.

My opinion is still this: caliber is not as important as quality and the fit to your hand. Go to a local gun store, try different guns and find the one that you feel most comfortable holding at the right angle.

Don't rush to buy anything. Go home and do some homework. Maybe that frame comes in different calibers.

A S&W 617 is nice, then buy its big brother, the S&W 686.

S&W 327 TRR8

the S&W 617 is .22lr
the S&W 686 is .38special/.357MAG
the 327 TRR8 is also .38special/.357MAG

I find pistols more comfortable to shoot, but you may like revolvers better. Go to the range and shoot different makes.
I personally like 1911 frame, but some prefer Glock, and some like HK.

Good Luck

Any reliable gun is a good gun to start with, 9mm is a great choice. .22 is a must and Everybody need a .357 mag too. I will get a 9mm first, to fire some real deal.

Agreed with the others; comfort & fit are the priority. All other factors being equal, starting with a .22 is a good way to learn with something that shouldn't teach you to flinch, and affords you plentiful cheap practice ammo that can be fired on outdoor & most indoor ranges. Your budget, your choice.

Best handgun for a newbie?

whats the best hand gun to start out with? would it be a 9mm, .22 cal or something bigger?

No problema, senor. Get a .22 revolver! It is the easiest, safest, and most economical handgun to start with. Have a look at the S&W 617. Don't worry about the cost. You'll keep it for years and years. In other words : don't buy junk.

start with a .22 I started with 9mm and shot like crap. I dropped 400 on a ruger mkIII .22 started shooting better then because I could buy tons of ammo to practice with for next to nothing.

I will be starting with a 9mm if the dam slow ontario cfo ever gets a move on bought it because it was cheap and ammo isn't very expensive about 200 bucks for 1000

I would say start off with a .22 be it a revolver or a semi-auto for ammo is inexpensive & not great kick.

The Ruger MkII or III 510 with 5.5" bull bbl is a darn good semi auto with decent asjustable sights, but if you have the extra $300.00 you might go for the S&W 17X6 or 617X6" for a bit extra.

Yeah, and .22 is about $30 for 1000. Means more practise.
I had a .22 Taurus revolver, and traded it for a Ruger Standard. Wish I hadn't - that wheel gun shot great.

Caster456, is there any chance that you have a friend that owns several handguns in different calibres? If so, perhaps they will let you shoot them and see what calibre you prefer. Then start looking and holding as many handguns as you can in your calibre until one feels right to you. Lastly, try to rent the one you like and shoot it. Regards, Richard:D

PS I have taught people to shoot that had no interest in a 22.

I would buy the gun you really like. If you can try it out first to insure that it works for you. It is true that you can learn/practice the fundamentals on any pistol but it might as well be on a pistol you really like. My first pistol was a Usp and I have never regreted it.

I have owned my fair share of .22's, but they tend to get boring.......I started with a .45 ACP......and I never looked back.

Just get a gun, any gun, and send ammo down range.
