Hello All,

I am just getting into shooting and would like to get into long range shooting. I want to start with .22 because I figure I can blast alot of rounds down range for very little money.

People have been suggesting the savage axis in .22 as a starter rifle. I did some reading and there are several different models.

My question is can any of you make a suggestion for a rifle to start with? either savage or other brand.

I will need optics aswell so sugestions on that would be great aswell.

Why not go with a Savage 93r in .22lr? Or a 93r in .17hmr... I have a .17hmr and love it. Its excellent out to 100 yards but ive never gone farther... I have the week off and will be attempting some 200 yard shots with it though. I love it... shoot it alot more than my Savage 10 BA...

I've got a CZ 452. Brilliant little rifle, holds 1MOA at 100yds with regular ammo. Easy to switch the other calibers with its quick-change barrels.

As for optics, lots of choice. Don't need anything more then x9 to x12 magnification.

what .22 cartridge are you thinking of?

.223 would be the cheapest centerfire, but if you are just buying your first rifle defiantly get a .22 LR bolt action to start off. the savages are nice and inexpensive

you can shoot hundreds of rounds for very little money and develop some skills

then I would look at getting a center fire and shoot the crap out of the 100 yard range for a while

once you get to this point you will know more what you want and can decide for your self

good luck

im a big fan of the savage mkII series, i have a TRR-SR and have sucessfully taken it out to 400+yds on a 15" steel gong ith 7+ hits out of 10 on a regular bassis. Ran out of scope elevation, and mills to hold over so i was just guessing holding some where on the stadia, no doubts it would be much better with actually being able to aim properly

I have a Savage Mark II BTV, wouldn't trade it for anything but a BTVSS :p

The mark2 with a stainless heavy barrel is one ###y rig
especially with some nice glass
But for a option the Marlin xt is all about tack driving and for the price
you would have alot more left to put on glass
just my 2 cents

I was thinking about starting with a .223 but I figure I can do alot more shooting for alot less money with a .22.

Cost shouldn't be your only deciding factor. Are you mainly going to a range that is max 200 yards? go with a .22 lr. If you have the desire and means to shoot 300 plus yards on a regular basis, get a .223

Then rimfire is your best bet. not saying you can't go centerfire at shorter distances (most people don't shoot their .308's past 200) but it's not the most cost effective and it won't be as much of a challenge= less fun. One rifle you may be interested in is the sako quad. It's pricey but also essentially four rifles in popular rimfire cartridges, not to mention it'll be super accurate so you won't be able to blame the gun ;)

there are a few in the EE that Ive been watching. I had contacted someone that can offer me the test and they are unavailable in the near futur. I am just trying to find someone else local so I can write the test.

i had a savage 93r17 and it was under 1/2 moa at 100 yards, and would hold 1 moa at 200 yards. but it was very brand specific on what it liked.

if you want a "precision" .22 youre looking at anything from cooper or anchutz.

just get a .223, the difference between 200-300 isnt much, and nothing says you cant learn to shoot a .223 at shorter distances, that way you wont have to worry about buying another rifle.

I have been a shooter all my life... and I would never be without a .22 rifle... Not to mention that ammo and time are the two biggest costs to shooting so why not have something like a .22 that makes the best of both...

:D Get your .22 and enjoy... they Savage accutrigger models or another rifle that has aftermarket triggers available are your best bet for bang for $

any suggestions on a scope for a mark 2 .22?

Some people have suggestied a scope I can move from one rifle to another as I move up in caliber. However I would like a scope I can leave on the .22 when I do upgrade so I can shoot multiple rifles at the range without moving scopes around. I was thinking either a fixed 4x scope or a 3-9x scope.

Any suggestions?
