I agree completly, however I plan to put a scope on each rifle i plan to use as a target rifle but dont want to change them from one rifle to the next.
Im hoping I can find a scope that is good enough to shot out to a couple hundred yards without breaking the bank. Obviously once I get a rifle I plan to shoot further I will buy a better scope.

I'm still fairly new to fire arms, but I do lots and lots of research before putting money out (young family, tight budget), so take my advise with that in mind. After lots of research, I decided the best rifle/scope combination for my budget was a Savage MkII GL with a Bushnell Trophy 3-9x40. I'm quite happy with that as a starting combo and I've taken it out to +200m with regular hits. After lots of time behind the trigger learning, I know the direction I want to head as far as upgrades (CZ, mil/mil scope with ao).

One thing to consider is that lower priced scopes for .22LR normally have parallax set to 50meters. That means within about 15 to 75 meters or so there is little error until you want to reach further. Large rifle scopes without parallax adjustment are set to 100 meters and are terrible to use at shorter ranges with a .22LR because of that.
If your scope does not have a parallax adjustment you will not get the best accuracy. A Manitoba company sells the Mueller scopes that have a very reasonable price, are decent quality and were positively reviewed and reported by the Sniper Central web site.

I'll throw in my two bits here - I've got the Vortex Viper 6.5-20x44 on my Savage Mark II BTVS, and I'm loving the combination. The scope can be had for about $450 at various retailers, and I'd be happy to mount it on a larger calibre rifle when I move up to centerfire eventually. It's parallax-adjustable from 50 yards to infinity (not planning to shoot THAT far, but...) and the glass and eye relief are both great.

I used to shoot an old Brno Mod4 at reasonable distances (200 yards) after a while I settled on a Bushnell Elite scope with adjustable objective - not too spendy and had the features I needed. Incidentally, Nikon makes a great (and inexpensive) 3-9 rimfire scope with BDC feature.
