hey there, i have been looking into 3 gun more and more lately...
what are the basic necessities for a 3 gun rifle?
looking around i see quite a few offerings in the 1000-1200 dollar range witch is my budget for the rifle only
(not including sights / optic, accessories)
so my question is... can one buy a "base model AR" and be set?
looking at: bushmaster xm-15, Core 15, stag, DPMS, whindam, NEA
most have handguards, not free float. is that okay?

Furthur, is there any good threads on how to get started?
do i need a black badge? or do alot of clubs require to be registered with ipsc to enter a 3 gun match?

buy a SKS with 2 crates of ammo and learn how to shoot and load mechanically. Guaranteed you will come out in the top third, even 5 rounds at a time.

So many people spend 3k on a rifle and sights and can't really use it yet.

But then don't cry when you have to spend money on ammo that isn't steel core come match day.

Match organizers don't appreciate this happening to their expensive steel targets:

i see, so if i wanted to attend essa 3gun and im not a member then i would need to register with ipsc and do the black badge?
I think im just gonna buy a "entry level" AR then sort it out later

Frankly, I've never seen anyone come in the top half much less the top third! The gun isn't accurate enough for any type of quick precision shooting past 75 yds, other than myself I have NEVER seen any SKS shooter take the time to properly modify their stripper clips to effect a quick and efficient reload. Most just either tape up the end with duck tape in order not to get cut by the sharp edges. Most SKS shooters, don't have the appropriate kit to hold spare clips in a position for a quick reload.

With a proper setup, for example an M1 Garand cartridge belt and modifyed clips a practiced shooter can get 20-25 rds down range per minute. Mind you by the time you have done that the barrel vibration will be so bad , the targets better be within 10 meters or your gonna miss. I love when SKS shooters show up at a 3 gun match, after all, someone has to come last.

In Ontario, a holster course is probably requited depending on the club. In terms of basics in a rifle, I would say optics, trigger and comp, in that order...we have the ability to shoot at 300m at our club, so an sks may not be the right choice

I have shot my 3 gun matches with my M-1 carbine, M14 rifle and Ar-15 rifle. This year I am going to try it also with my SKS and bolt action 303 Jungle carbine, etc. I don't care where I place I just like to shoot. At least the jungle carbine has a 10 round mag.

I have used a SKS in a 3 gun match. It is not ideal, and I had fun. Nobody is shooting 3 gun in Canada for the money, its all about the fun.

However back to the original question, any AR would be fine. The ergonomics are decent to begin with and it is a very popular rifle so there is a ton of accessories available for it.

x2 on that I shot a 3-gun match with my D-box SKS this year, and as pointed out above the only handicap I found was going against the LAR mags...and maybe optics. Point is it was fun, no desire to run out and buy something else at this point. All stages at ours are within pistol distance mind you, but I'd also be inclined to grab my .303 - or a levergun, should the distance prove unworkable.

Of course I'd love an AR-15 and am looking for an excuse - but the OP's question is about a good starter gun; I wouldn't overlook the SKS for it's price and availability to see if you like the sport or not. You can easily sell it later for an upgrade and lose little or nothing.

It's sad... Here we are in one of the largest countries on the planet and we're shooting rifles at 100 yards or less...
In our travels in the US sure there are a few shots at close range, but most of the rifle targets are at rifle distances... Upwards of 500 yards.
We suck

I do hear ya

Our particular range (at the least that part most suited for action shootin) is limited in that regard by simple geography ;)
