starter rifle for 3 gun?

We're limited by our laws too...
I mean at some matches I've been to in the states the stages are set up on private property...
Farm fields for example...
We just can't do that simply because we can't fire our handguns, AR's and other restricted firearms anywhere but on an "approved" range.
Really good 3-gun is for all practical purposes legislated out of existence.

Pass me a tissue.

No its definatly possible for something to be setup. The only issue like everything in life is money, time and paperwork. If you have enough of all 3 your can practically setup anything you want.

How popular are the pistol caliber carbines?

I see Kriss Vector, JR-Carbine, and Sub-2000 rifles flying off of store shelves everywhere.

Are they ending up at the 3-gun matches?
 
Not sure if pistol caliber would make the power factor. I'm not looking to get serious, just local club match or 2. Is everyone using the lar mags? Or a lot using 5 rounders?
 
shut up paul, you're not supposed to let people know about those parties. just like i'm not supposed to talk about the gift basket USPSA sends you when you get your M card. Those pills that make your shjt smell like fresh baked brownies are awesome

Actually a lot of it is target resetting or scoring. The farther the targets, the better the chance at establishing a bottleneck that will slow down the competition. I put on a match once, that started at 0900, and ended at 1940 hrs because of a bottleneck. Talk about a bunch of pissed off competitors.
 
Use steel gongs of the size desired for long range and have a spotter call out hits.
No need to reset anything.

Did you consider setting up the stage such that multiple competors would shoot it side by side? If say 50% of a squad were able to shoot it at a time, then you are through the entire stage in about the amount of time that two competitors would shoot singly. Depends on the stage and range set up (requires a very linear range setup with relatively fixed firing point). Not sure if that is against the rules.

Not against the rules... Just against the whole premis of stage design for 3-gun.
 
Listen I have found buy an AR-15 and over time you can add what you find you need. A good optic and compensator and then a good trigger is always a must. An AR lets you grow with your learning of the game.

Designing courses for 3 gun is about the flow and making it a challenge without being too difficult for the new shooter that 85% are in Canada.

My 2 cents
 
For his price range i'd say he can get a nicely used North American made AR, again I like Bushmaster. A bit more and i'd say the XCR's are nice too.
The converted CZ 858's in .223 with 10 round LAR mags would work fine and in his price range (N/R to boot).

To answer an earlier question pistol calibre carbines in ON aren't allowed for the 2-3 3gun matches that are held. I'd love to see one come out though since my new 9mm AR will be used solely for port shooting....

Is this a new thing? At the TH3G last year there was a guy in my squad sporting a pcc (CX Storm).

If a guy wants to compete using his PCC... We've got no problem letting him shoot the match with a PCC... If there are a few guys with PCC's we could even name a seperate PCC division for that match...
That said though... By "3-Gun Match" we mean RIFLE, SHOTGUN and HANDGUN... The rifle being a full power "rifle" cartidge.
The rifle portion of the stages will be designed with rifle in mind.
If you want to give it a whirl with a PCC... Knock yourself out.
If you can knock out 4" targets at 100 yards with your PCC... Great. If not... Take the miss and move on ;-)

IMHO all you've got with a PCC is an oversized pistol...

The moving on part seems to be the problem. I have no issue with people using PPC's, but having them lob 2 or 3 mags at a piece of steel that is 150 yards out is a serious match bottle neck, and serious buzz killer! A match directors nightmare one might say. I am seriously considering lowering the par time from 180 seconds, to 120 seconds for this years Zombie Match....people need to step up their game
 
I read some rules that the rifle had to be in a rifle calibre, makes sense. I believe like any friendly match certain things are allowed regardless of the rules, which if they aren't offering too much of an advantage i'm not against. I'd love to see a PCC stage or match though. 120 seconds? This would only benefit me as i'm young and speedy, it's the actual hitting my targets that is the problem.
