Starter shotgun?

It was a charity event at a gun club, so we had some 5 shot tickets, plus bought a few more. The one which was titled Clay Trap had clay disc flying away from front of me, going straight up further away. The skeet one was clays going right to left. Or am I mistaken?

I could be wrong, but to my understanding a long barrel with modified choke is good for trap/skeet and a shorter cylinder bore barrel is okay for targets.

It sounds like you shot part of a round of trap, and part of a round of skeet, not enough to really get a real understanding of either game, especially skeet. As for a mod choke, it's a good choice for trap, but a less than desirable choice for skeet.

I know, I still want to do more moving targets though, and the Mossberg 500 with a modified choke barrel and a cylinder bore seems like it might work for a starter. Plus I have a $20 coupon for Cabelas, so it'll be pretty affordable :p

Does less than desirable mean it is still workable for skeet for just getting a feel of things, but not perfect?

Far from perfect. A skilled skeet shooter could still do well with a mod choke, but it isn't a good choice for a beginner.

The 28 inch barrel with chokes is the "do everything" barrel. You can shoot skeet or trap with the appropriate choke, or shoot rifled slugs or buckshot at stationary targets - again with the appropriate choke. A 18 to 20 inch barrel is typically for deer hunting, where a shorter gun is easier to manage in the woods. However, you could still use a 28 inch barrel effectively.
If the short barrel has rifle sights, that would be a big plus. Trying to shoot slugs with a front bead only is limiting. So, in my mind, a 20 inch cylinder bore barrel that doesn't have rifle sights doesn't offer much. I have one for my 870, and I've used it once in 10 years ....

So which fixed choke pump action shotgun would be more suitable for any practical use of a shotgun?

Modified choke, 28" barrel, is going to be the most versatile...not too long a barrel for upland, (and you can still take closer shots and get a few pellets into a bird at longer range with the mod choke where you ideally would use a full choke) and you can still make wing shots. Always sweet to have an over/under with screw-in chokes, one barrel full choke for long shots using heavy magnum loads, and one barrel improved cylinder with light loads for close shots.

Hello gentlemen :)

I just wanted to say thanks again for all the advice, I checked out quite a few shotguns today at Cabelas and decided on the Mossberg 500 combo. Will hopefully get a chance to head out to a range this week for some trap, bought 250 rounds of ultra light #8 (7/8 oz) and 50 rounds of #7.5. Ammo should last me a while I guess. :p

Thanks again,
Amol

P.S. The Winchester seemed better built for about the same size, but the Mossberg fit me better and was lighter. No synthetic Remingtons in stock.

Nothing wrong with Mossberg shotguns, Rem 870s and Mossbergs were thoroughly tested by the US Army and are both in use.

Exactly why I asked my question. I am not at all surprised that he hasn't responded.

About two days of skeet or sporting clays for me, although I have shot more than a flat in one day.

For general purpose target and clays, I like a open cyl 20" 500/590 with maximum shell capacity. Mine does just fine on both whether it's paper zombie targets or hand thrown clays...and I own many different shotgun configurations to compare. Expectations shattered.

Paper zombie targets with a shotgun explains it all.:p
