Hi all,

I got my trapping license and found some live raccoon traps for cheap, so I thought I would use them to make a couple extra bucks this summer doing nuisance trapping.

My question is, in Ontario, are there strict rules on starting a business like this? I personally just wanna trap for a few people in the neighborhood, nothing serious, can I just do this under my trapping license and not go through a long and expensive process of starting a legal business etc...

You have to get a business license.... you have to declare your earning and charge HST.... if you need a truck and soem office space in your house you can right off some of your car loan and mortgage.... :)

Any body who knows anything about wildlife control knows trapping in the summer is useless, unless you euthanise the animal, which you can't do without a trapping permit, you have to release it within 1 km and momma will travel many times that to get back to an attic full of kits.

I worked in the industry last summer, learned alot.

Wildlife Control is not trapping, it's excluding animals from properties. We cleaned up after alot of hacks who bought a few live traps cheap.

I do a lot of nuisance critter (beaver mostly) removals with just my trapping license. You only need to do HST if you will be making over $30,000.

Do I need to purchase a business license or register a name if I just do it under my trapping license?

I understand totally, I have a trapping permit and plan on dispatching the animal, my trapping instructor said, if you are trapping and killing in the summer, as bad as the fur is dont throw it out, still use it, what did you guys do in the summer then? How did you handle nuisance calls? Live traps then dispatch?

Let me answer your question with a question. How do you handle the kits? momma leaves 6 kits in an attic and you kill momma, 6 kits starve and rot in the attic creating enormous liability issues.

If you want to talk trade secrets lets do it via pm.

Hey, well I was hoping to start this up late enough that I wouldn't have to worry about the kits, but I know I am not knowledgeable enough to start this yet. I will definitely pm you soon, I could really use some advice. I am relatively new and no one in my family or friends hunts or traps, so its been a challenge to self teach myself...

On a second note, what is a rough estimate of a decent price to pay for a live cage trap to fit a raccoon?

Depending on the trap, used probably 50-150$, TSC has low quality traps for around 99$ new.

I don't recommend the cheap TSC trap, its OK for a bit but mine is falling apart and I only bought it last October. The last time I used it the racoon was able to get out of it by pushing on the gate until the supports bent and out he went, after that he was too smart to get caught again and just ripped the wires open on the side of the cage to get at the bait. Spend a little bit more and get a good one.

You should get insurance, your trapping insurance just covers you for trapping. 2 million liability should be good but it will run you about 500-800$.

Locate, remove. Simple.
Once you have been at it a while it is all very routine, raccoons are very habitual.
I have had a nuisance animal business, do it full time and have for 15 years. I have seen many companies come and go over the years, but if you spend enough time with the critters, it becomes second nature.
Once you have the mother, there are many ways to get the kits, and many ways to get the mother to do it for you.
