Starting Ipsc how many mags needed

Alex you need to check and practice a bit more often.....5 mag's on belt + 1 rounds........and an additional mag in the gun....6 mag is my minimum...I have 8 mag's minimum for my current gun and the wife has 7 same caliber.....

Last year at the ontario provincial because of the sandy ground I had to clean every mag's that drop! so there's no such thing as too many :)

NOTE: factor in the chance of dropping mags on reloads and knocking them out during movement....

stick to at least 5 on the belt!

Geeze! How much space do you guys have around your waist?!?

Even putting magazines around the front (I shoot open) I still have a real hard time reaching that 5th magazine pouch. ;)

i am fat!

hehe..

geez boys so quick to insult!

The definition of stripper mag was asked, I was just giving the definition that was taught to me, not necessarily my common way of doing things...

you don't even need a stripper mag if you have a Beretta (or Taurus); since you can load the first round right thru the ejection port :)

...guns were not desined to be used like this...

Once in a while would be OK...but loading in t his fashio is hard on the extractor (even on a Beretta  )

I'd DQ you for unsafe gun handling, personally.
Unsafe gun handling? are you kidding? OK the slide is locked back, you drop a round in the chamber than release the slide, than insert the loaded magazine. how is this unsafe

actually Beretta was; in the manual it says that (in combat situations) where a magazine is damaged or lost you can still shot the gun by loading right into the chamber.

Any gun can be loaded like this...but it still forces the extractor to jump over the extraction groove and rim (depending on caliber) of the case . OK for occasional situations...but not ideal over the long term...it will eventually toast the extractor...

Exactly.. And it's possible to cause a slam fire doing it.

Maybe the CRO or arbitration commitee would reverse it, but I'd DQ you.

Actually, more realistically, I'd never let you do something so abysmally dumb if you looked like you were about to.

In this sport (Mostly IPSC shooters responded stating they would probably DQ you for loading the pistol this way), others who have years of experience and thru trial and error are trying give you some sound advice. don't take it the wrong way, but we have to be as carefull as possible on the range and at matches. the Anti-gun public would be all over the shooting sports if someone was hurt at a match. Rules for safety are there for your safety and the safety of those on the range. An IPSC or IDPA or what ever type of shooting match is not a combat scenario; no one is shooting back at you. In a pinch if you HAD to load you can do it this way, but at a match the proper way to do it is to load it via a magazine,, remove that mag and either top it off with another round, or use a full 10rd mag.

Hope this helps.

For all the DQ-trigger-happy folks, please give me the rule number under which a match DQ is warranted.

I fear that too many people in IPSC, especially recently minted officials, have a tendency to confuse their "gut reaction" or personal feelings with actual rules.

Unless you can find me a rule number which states that doing this is a DQ-able offence, you'd just embarras yourself by trying to DQ someone who manually loaded a round into the chamber.

As far as saying that this had the "potential" to cause a discharge, so what? So does manually decocking for the first shot, if you're not careful. If the gun remains pointed in a safe direction, you're fine, and if it doesn't, well, that THAT is something you can/will get DQed for.

Your job as officials is to enforce the rules, not expand on them. It is NOT your job to make the jumps from "bad idea" to DQ. Vince Pinto and his friends are always on a lookout for new ideas, feel free to submit it to them. Until it makes its way into the little red book, as long as you don't cause the gun to fire while doing it, it's perfectly legal.
