Starting point? .308 1 in 11 twist, 165gr Barnes

I'm very new to reloading, and want to develop an accurate hunting load.

I would like to use the 165 Grain Barnes TSX (or Tac-X, which I understand is identical). Any suggestions for powders to try? I have some IMR 4350, but since powder isn't that expensive I'm willing to try a few. My rifle is a Sako 75 with 1 in 11" twist and a 22.5" barrel. Also, since those bullets are expensive, could I expect another 165gr bullet to perform similarly for trial runs?

As to the details of the reloading process, no need for the usual warnings as I will be taking this stuff to an experienced reloader who will be helping/instructing/supervising.

You might want to try Sierra 168 grain Boat-Tail Hollow Point MatchKing. They are very accurate, and sort of an industry standard. If I recall, they are relatively inexpensive. The grain difference isn't much, and the Sierra will get you 95% of the way there as far as load development.

I have used 4895 in the past. It worked very well for this combination.

Quite frankly, your experienced reloader could answer this question for you.

I ALWAYS work up a round using bulk ammo, then switch to the better stuff if I am going to use that.

Case in point, I will work up a round for x39mm hunting rounds by using FMJ. Once I get an accurate load, I switch to hunting tips for with that charge. Then fire for zero confirmation. This allows you not only the ability to shoot lots, cheaply, which serves to get you used to the rifle, but also to make up accurate rounds using stuff you would normally have to throw away.

I use the same deal with .303Br and 7.62X54mmR. Milsurp over the years has netted me a great store of FMJ 174gn and 150gn. I use them both to work up loads. Not much .303Milsurp coming my way and I will soon be out, but I can still get the occasional crate of 762x54R which allows me to develop 150gn rounds.
