Starting to load 40s&w

Hey I'm just starting to reload 40 s&w. I have a horandy tapered die set. Any tips at all? Bullets powder etc.? 10mm bullets good to use?

10mm and .40 are interchangeable .401 for plated/jacketed. Power pistol and Titegroup are popular, as well as campro 180"s.

TITEGROUP is a good powder to start using , 40SW 9MM and .223 mousefart can all be done with TG. I use a dillon 550 so YMMV

campro 180gr with 4.6 grains of titegroup is a nice load that makes IPSC major and cycles perfectly for me.

What are you shooting it out of? 4.6gr TG behind a 180gr Campro got me 170PF on the button out if my Tanfoglio. Haven't tried it from my TSO.

Every double charged blown-up 40 to come by my shop was done with titegroup.
It may be cheap and work well, but it is apparently easy to double charge and not notice.
Load carefully.

Highly recommend the lee undersized 40 sizing die. Makes for an great, strong crimp on plated bullets without breaking the plating.

Ive been using 180 campro bullets and Zero 165 JHP bullets. The Zero bullets are more accurate. Campros are decent and cheap. Ive used W231 and Titegroup and HS6.
W231 and Titegroup make great target loads. HS6 gives me best accuracy so far but it has to be max loads or close to it. I shoot a 4.5" barreled CZ75b.

Noone mentioned OAL which plays a big factor in reloading. I reload 180gr at 1.18 OAL and no way any of the loads mentioned above will make major power factor with this OAL. What gun are you shooting and what OAL are you loading? Than figure out the charge. Mine is 5gr of TG and it is right on the border of major with 1.18 OAL!

My load is 180 Grain Hornady HAP, pushed by 4.7 grains of TiteGroup. Max load, extremely accurate. I load one round at a time, not in a hurry and then no chance for a double charge. As with any reloading a double charge is deadly, so safety is number one.

Skip the 180 grain bullets. The recoil impulse is almost the same as 45acp.

Where 40 S&W really shines are with light bullets. Campro makes 155 grain & 165 grain bullets. Like most auto pistol calibers, 40S&W gives excellent performance & accuracy with fast burning powders. Small charges of fast burning powders like WW231, RedDot, Clays, WST, 700X, Bullseye......

Cheapest and possible best Insurance in a progressive Press is a Lock out Die. (mine is made by RCBS) Otherwise check every Shell with a Flashlight before adding the Bullet.

I know a Guy which ruined 2 Pistol Barrels by shooting Bullet into "stuck in the Barrel" Bullet, need I say more.
