If I ever sold the rifle I would put the old triggerguard back on, keep the magazine & rear sight as well. It's fun to do stuff for yourself sometimes. :)

Nice work Fat Tony! Feels good doesn't it.

Yes i agree your not "bubba", nice work. A gunsmith shop would charge you more than the gun is worth for that trigger guard, lots of full time smiths got started working at home and building skills then opened a shop. Keep up the nice work.

I figured if I were to charge myself for the work involved, this trigger guard is worth about $250 after bluing. And seeing as not many people do this kind of thing for themselves it's kind of neat knowing I have such a high quality one of a kind part that you won't find anywhere else. That's what I draw satisfaction from. Because obviously it will never be really worth $250 in the eyes of a buyer in today's market.

I do a lot of stock work and have painted hundreds of parts..... Semi-gloss has looked crappy every time I tried it... If you want more sheen, satin has a nice refined look... I wouldn't go glossier than that. JMO.

I'll remember that for future reference. On this round I've settled on rust bluing this piece... May as we'll go for broke.

Well...

I remembered I still had some oxpho blue left over from my less adventurous smithing days, and I figured what the heck. I plan to blast it before rust blue anyhow... May as well be "blue" until it's blued!

Turned out not bad... Keep in mind I'm still not done the final sanding. I want to do that before the rust bluing.

BUBA SCREWS THAT KILLS IT

Yeah the guard looks big in up close shots, but it's pretty proportional overall. I wanted enough room for a gloved finger, and it gets just that and not much more. But truth be told I thought the same thing looking at a couple of my pics. It feels and looks right in person... And It's too much work to change it now anyway lol

And the BUbba screws are temporary... I'm making a rounded set that will be countersunk and blued with the guard

Lol, I guess my idea of what bubba means was off a bit. To me it was someone who can't leave well enough alone... But it's part that, and equal parts incompetence?

I'm now thinking of adding an over travel screw, a nice little flathead grub screw that sits flush at the right setting... The trigger breaks so clean and light and with zero pretravel, I bet I could get it down to .005" total movement on the trigger.

The end is in sight. I've got some laurel mountain forge barrel brown & degreaser on its way to properly rust blue this thing, so I figured I'd strip the cold blue off and finish the sanding/shaping. Made the new screws too.

The bluing solution finally showed up today after two weeks stuck in customs... I've got it rusting now in a makeshift humidity box (my wifes' plant propagation tray with big clear dome).

Should be done by tomorrow! And it looks to be rusting the welds evenly with the rest of the steel so my fears may be put to rest... stand by!
