I've heard conflicting information from a couple of people and I was wondering
what the classification of an Armalite AR-10 in .308 with a 20" (508mm) barrel is.

Some people have said like the AR-180-B it has so few parts in common with
the AR-15 that it is not a variant and thus non-restricted, others have said it is.

What's the truth?

Restricted. Whoever told you it's non-restricted is either:
- misinformed
- a goof
- a sleezy salesman who doesn't know his arse from a hole in the ground.
- someone who doesn't know what an AR15 is.

Sad, but true. 100% restricted.

This ones been done a lot. The new AR-10 rifles including DPMS LR-308 and other makes are restricted. The new ones are viewed to be variants of the AR-15 rifle. Only the original AR-10 rifles (All two of them that were made in Semi auto) are non restricted. These original AR-10 rifles are made of unobtanium and give instant god status when acquired. Ok I made that last part up. :D

Didn't the AR-10 as it is now not exist when "Regulations Prescribing Certain Firearms and other Weapons, Components and Parts of Weapons, Accessories, Cartridge Magazines, Ammunition and Projectiles as Prohibited or Restricted" listed the M-16 and AR-15 why was the AR-10 not included with the rather detailed list of variants most of which are more similar to the AR-15 than the AR-10 is. If the list prohibition is a generic guideline why list so many similar firearms while not listing less similar firearms if they're also included?

Is there an official published policy on the classification provided by the CFC and if so has anyone challenged it by asking for judicial review of the policy?

Isn't the president in Canadian common law such that if a list of examples is provided in legislation the bounds of that list are taken to be the bounds of the legislation such that items included in the list are provide examples what is included in the most restrictive way possible?

If that's the case everything I see listed under the M-16 status is more similar than the AR-10 is.

The AR-10 and variants are included in the AR-15. It's that simple. If you can afford a good lawyer you may want to challenge it, it shouldn't cost more than about $150,00.

Thats your answer. Orignal, semi-auto AR-10 = non restricted

Current AR-10, VARIANT of AR-15 that it is = restricted
