Got invited to a hunt up north and was told to bring the A5 three inch mag
12 gauge me pah bawt me new in the early 80's.
It's a fixed full choke and did my first goose hunting with it.
Yup, dun git me first gewse........................................................

Is it safe or okay to shoot steel BB's through this full choked barrel?
Was considering getting it threaded chokes.
Barrel is 30" and full ribbed.

Its not recommended to shoot steel out of a fixed full choke. Has it been safely done before...YES. But you run the risk of damaging the barrel. If You want to save some cash, you can also have the choke opened up to modified which will be steel safe(r). Many times threading it for chokes doesnt make it steel safe. If the barrel isnt thick enough to thread for regular chokes, it would need to be threaded for thin wall chokes. Many will agree that steel isnt recommended through thin wall chokes. If your intention is to merely shoot steel, have the fixed choke reamed to modified or light modified

Personally I wouldn't shoot steel through that full choke. It would be a shame to bulge the barrel on a gun that your dad bought you. Getting it threaded for choke tubes or opening up the choke to at least modified would be the way I would go. Happy hunting.

I wouldn't shoot steel shot down anything that was made before non-toxic was mandatory replacement for lead for migratory game birds. I know because I've tried it... fortunately in a cheap single shot. I bought a new barrel for the 870 (remchokes) instead of scarring the original Wingmaster fixed choke barrel.

What about getting another barrel that's more open? That way you still have your original full barrel and something else too.

This is what I did.
I don't imagine steel through a full would pattern very well even if safe.
I believe there are some options for non tox shells for antique guns, but might be cheaper to get another barrel!

I shot Kent fast steel #1 1550fps through a full terror choke and it expanded and got stuck in my barrel right after the first day of hunt!!! And the maker of this choke was exactly that - long distance shoots from a fully choke

Lookey, I wouldnt be shootin steel BB through that A-5 in the full choke configuration.
If I was feelin lucky it would only be 1's or 2's over decoys and nothing larger...thats just me though.
Butt, if it was the Japanese Barrel for that A5 then it would be good 2 go, but with 1's or 2's and nothing larger in the Full Choke.
Have it reamed by the guy you use to do your Win.22 dovetail jobs... then again maybe not ;)

Heading back to GP are you?

Need tuh sniff this owtt a bit more.
One gewse hunting trip in awll me yeers here make's fer tuff wishing to add to the ko-lecktshun.
Now a barrel as in a spare is intertaint'in.

Back when steel shot came out we didnot know much about shooting it through particular choke tubes and belled a lot of old full choke barrels. Actually split the end on one A5
So no I would not fire any BB out of a A5 full choke. Me I would not fire any size steel shot out of a full choked made for lead barrel
Cheers

Browning has clear recommendations regarding steel shot in Auto5 shotguns on their website.

Looky, best pay attention to booknuts warning here.........Am pretty sure that Browning advises against steel shot in any of their fixed choke guns regardless of constriction......ie changing it to modified is still a "no no" as far as Browning is concerned.

I think it is Hastings that makes aftermarket barrels for A-5's and prolly a few more too.
So, the barrel issue is corrected by dropping three or maybe four brown ones with todays peso exchange.
Might even be more or it might be less, but it can be done.
Just a matter of priorities.
