Mooncoon, it seems that you and tiraq are doing the same thing but in slightly different ways.
I actually doubt that the brass hammer as opposed to using a rounded shoe is going to matter in this case.
We are doing it somewhat differently; I am pushing the bulk of the dent out with the wedges before using the wedges like an internal mandril to finish the outside. Tiriaq is simply putting (an expandible) mandril on the inside and doing all of the work from the outside. On small dents like the ones in the photo, it probably does not make a lot of difference but on larger or deeper dents, I think you almost have to push out first.
More importantly, the concave brass piece (which I hit with a hammer) eliminates the risk of small flats on the barrel. I can't remember if I used a steel or brass hammer the first time but the little flats made me decide to use the concave brass ever since
