Taking a 12ga up for the moose hunt in a week in hopes that I might be able to pop off a few ducks while i'm up there. For the most part I know that its recommended to use a screw in Mod choke designed for steel use but I have a winchester 1200 with a fixed mod choke barrel...will the steel shot ruin this barrel? Also if we are shooting clays over the water will I still need to use steel shot? or is lead alright for that purpose? Thanks

Stay with #4 shot for ducks and the Mod choke should be fine.
Can't say for certain regarding lead shot at clays over water. Generally steel shot is required for waterfowl hunting whether over land or water, but there are a few places where upland game hunters need to use steel shot as well - that's not over water. And some trap fields shoot over water with no requirement to use steel . . .

Called winchester myself one time to check on a gun I have that was mfg around 1985 to see if steel could be fired through it safely. They said yes provided I din't run anything larger than #2 shot through winchokes up to and including Imp.Mod. I have been shooting that gun since then and followed their reccomendations as it was a very expensive gun in 1985 @ $2800 list, I have never had an issue to date and the bores look as good as new.
thanks for the answers guys and I didnt mean shooting clays over water i just noticed that....it was just my uncle saying that you cant have lead shot within something like 400 feet of water but I figured that was just him not thinking straight
Its not a good idea to be shooting lead over water ways just because of the fact that birds pick it up when eating other stuff off of the bottom of the marsh and ponds etc. That is the way the Duck Hunters Handbook Explains why the switch from lead to steel or non toxic happened.

Boy have I got a deal for you. I have Winchester Model 70 that is specially seasoned and conditioned for hunting that could be yours for only $1500.
i hate steel but the best ones ive found is remington fast steel #4 works awsome on ducks and i know people that blast steel outta full chokes and there guns shoot find so your definatly safe with your modified i have a modified 870 wingmaster works great
