Steel shot through old shot guns

I'd be interested in knowing why a club has a rule for steel shot? I could see if it was mandated but voluntarily would make little sense to me? I have used target loads with steel shot on clays and found little if any difference in performance at least on the sporting clays course I shot it on with most shot at under 30 yards but on some of the longer shots it seemed I got what I would term "soft" breaks. I don't think steel would make a great trap round with most shots from the 16 line being in the 32-38 yard range and of course very much longer shots in handicap, especially if you are a 25 - 27 yard handicap. As for your Model 84 Cooey? Buy yourself a case of lead target loads. You should be able to pick up a flat of 7.5's or 8's for $70 or so.

I assume it's because of soil contamination. It's only been opened since 2013, so by going steel only, they could at some point sell the property without having to de-contaminate? (Assuming everyone obeys the rules...yeah). Here it is right form the site:

This range officially opened on Sept 22nd 2013
Unlike our other range bays, this one is NOT open 365 days a year. Below is the proposed days & hours.

Rules

There are NO rifles or pistols allowed to be used on this range. (No Open Carry Either)
$4.00 / 25 Skeet for members, $7.00 / 25 Skeet for Guests
Members need to provide their own shot shells.
STEEL SHOT ONLY

You should not use steel shot, especially buck shot size, through a full choke. You will at some point bulge or crack the barrel on that gun using a full choke. That has a jug formed choke. If I was going to shoot steel through it I would cut the barrel off 3 or more inches. If the gun is an average condition gun, you have nothing to loose.

That's a new one to me; steel buckshot size???

Never heard of that before........

Not sure what you are asking. Are you saying you never heard of steel shot in buck shot size or are you saying there is no problem in using steel buck shot size in older guns with full chokes? As far as the buck shot, the OP mentioned "buck shot size". Likely he is referring to F or T size loads and is using buck shot size as a general term. Just my guess.

Semantics.
But if one used F or T shot up here and tried to consider it buckshot, one would have a problem with fish and wildlife.

rightly so too
