I have a Stevens 820B 12 Gauge
2 3/4 inch
28 inch barrel with a Savage Super Choke.

Is it ok to put steel shot threw it? I have bought some federal field and range 8 shot shotshells for it and I believe they are steel doesn't say on the box for sure, description says : hard shot for uniform dense patterns and deep penetration.

If they are ok to shoot, does it matter what the choke is set too? I am just going to be shooting paper at the range for now.

I just opened the bulk box and the smaller box inside has a lead warning on the side, so I guess they are lead shot. would still be interested to know if steel is ok thou.

thanks

If a magnet sticks to the shell where the shot is it is steel, if not lead. Not real high tech but works. what restriction is your choke? If it is adjustable, open it to at least modified for steel, I would be more apt to open to improved cylinder for steel.

All shot will go through, but will it go through without causing damage? Better to contact the manufactur for information. It is my uinderstanding that Savage owns the stevens brand name. If you are not worried about damage, let her rip.

Size 8 steel should do little damage to the choke so long as there is a wad between them and the barrel. Smaller steel shot will cause less "possbile" damage, I would set the choke at modified or Improved cylinder and have at it.
