Steel targets - gongs

Hey guys I didn't want to hijack the other thread so I started this one. I want to get some steel gongs made up for some long range shooting. A 300 rum would be the biggest caliber I would use starting at say 400 yards. What thickness/type of steel would be adequate to not have holes poked in it? Also, what's the difference in the ar type steel I read about?

You will need a hardened steel plate for sure. I shoot at 1/2" AR-500 steel and nothing happens at 600 yards with a 300 winmag.

The higher the AR number the harder the steel.

I will shoot a 1/2" ar500 plate tomorrow with a 647g 50BMG API and post pictures at 300m.

Ar500 is the way to go, it will just pock mark or take the paint off with your 300wm.

MattMoser sold me my ar500 targets and I am way more than happy with them. Definitely the way to go.

Former Prohibited Weapons Order, No. 10
1. Any cartridge that is capable of being discharged from a commonly available semi-automatic handgun or revolver and that is manufactured or assembled with a projectile that is designed, manufactured or altered so as to be capable of penetrating body armour, including KTW, THV and 5.7 x 28 mm P-90 cartridges.

2. Any projectile that is designed, manufactured or altered to ignite on impact, where the projectile is designed for use in or in conjunction with a cartridge and does not exceed 15 mm in diameter.

3. Any projectile that is designed, manufactured or altered so as to explode on impact, where the projectile is designed for use in or in conjunction with a cartridge and does not exceed 15 mm in diameter.

4. Any cartridge that is capable of being discharged from a shotgun and that contains projectiles known as “fléchettes” or any similar projectiles.


Does anybody know if SOR/98-462 is applicable and how it is connected to the firearms act/criminal code?
