just bought a steger uplander and am wondering can I shoot without chokes installed? Does it hurt the threads for the chokes? Also I have it in 12 and 20 barrells. Would like to possibly shoot steel through both what chokes should i be using?

any help would be appreciated.

Yeah you should probably go ahead and not shoot without chokes. It would be bad for the threads. On my Stoeger choke package, it says to not use any choke tighter than modified for steel.

i know nothing about chokes, thats why i asked about shooting without them.

This is not intended as a criticism.....it would most certainly be to your advantage to first go through the instructions manual to better understand the firearm. A manual will usually provide the initial "DOs and DON'Ts" associated with handling and use.

Those screw-in chokes have been provided to enable the shotgun to function with a variety of barrel constrictions in order to propel/spread the shot charge/column appropriately at various distances. Discharging the firearm without the chokes installed will likele result in the damage to the exposed threads at that point. This would be more specifically the case if one is using steel shot. For steel shot, one must also use the screw-in chokes particularly designated for that purpose.

FYI, there are also shotguns that come with fixed chokes (constrictions) i.e. no threads in the bbls.

I shot my 12g S&W repeater for almost a whole skeet session without noticeing that i'd taken the choke out and forgot to reinstall it the night before. (no wonder they weren't smashing to dust)

The threads were great as the shot was still in the plastic cup as it passed by. Still though it's not a good idea to to on purpose as i'm sure it's not healthy for the threads in the long run.

"...those stegers..." That Stoeger company does have the manual's on-line either. Your best bet would be to call 'em and ask for one. (800) 264-4962
Mind you, rumour has it(assorted U.S. forums) that the manual isn't very good. Stoeger's FAQ's says to use modified for pass shooting and Cylinder or Improved Cylinder for shooting over decoys using steel shot.
