From an interview with Adrian Warwas:
"Q: Steiner is a German company. Some of other German companies have moved one part of their production to factories situated in foreign countries, especially China and Japan. Has Steiner followed that trend?
A:That is true: STEINER is 100% a German Company. Our major suppliers for raw materials are located in Germanybut in a globalised world materials and components are often from different origin."
Next time you chat with a for real Steiner employee (not the local rep) ask him where the roof prisms for his binoculars are made.
https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/751508/0000751508-99-000002.txt:
"Most of the Company's products are manufactured at its facilities in Bayreuth, Germany. The Company manufactures most of its products out of raw materials such as glass, metals and plastic. In 1993 the Company has begun to phase out the production of some components in order to reduce expenses and lowered the production costs of several products (at the very low end of its production line) by outsourcing the manufacturing of some components. This process has continued to date. The original counterparty in Eastern Europe turned out to be expensive and unreliable, and the Company has moved its outsourcing operation to the Far East where its counterparties have proven to be more reliable and more cost-effective."
etc etc
"The Company continues its strategic cost-reduction program and a search for additional outsourcing opportunities. The Company's counterparties in the Far East -- for outsourcing of components -- have proved to be more reliable and more cost-effective."
the two quotes above are from their "10K" submissions to the SEC ... I have seen other stuff published that they have been trying to bury that described the Chinese binocular manufacture. ... Anyway .. do what you like and spend money as you wish...
This stuff has been around the internet for a long long time ... and usually sources who really dont care one way or another. If they are now "assembling" some components in the US (or Germany) - to complete a hunting scope -- good for them. Search CGN ... IIRC there is a thread that discusses Steiner binocular failures somewhere.
*BTW -- I see they (with their associate, Burris Optics) have been acquired by Beretta
Looks interesting but it's pretty vague. You found a Chinese knockoff on alibaba which is hardly unheard of. Your second link does not work but only states some components are out sourced and Steiner only claims lens are German made. No big controversy so far.
You make vague inferences about roof prisms, provide a reference.
Also FWIW I am not commenting on quality (although the company reputation is pretty solid) so if you want to maintain that their binoculars are crap that is fine. You are claiming that they are made in China and that seems to be clearly incorrect.
