Sten deactivation

It seems a pitty to weld up a perfectly good barrel when a replica one is so easy to make.

Wold a replica barrel also be against the law ?

The CFC and the RCMP disagree on what is legally "the firearm" when it comes to Stens, but it is definitely not the barrel. If you took a (assumed legal) Sten, and somehow replaced the barrel, then you ought to be able to deactivate it with the replacement barrel in place. I don't think there's any such thing, legally speaking, as a "replica" barrel, so making one shouldn't be illegal.

It would seem that in the case of a MKII the Magwell only is the firearm. If that is the case then to deactivate a MKII would be an impossiblility without screwing up the magwell. All other parts could be replica parts in theory ?

Who knows? Get a written ruling from someone in a position to make a decision.
Here is an interesting quote from the FRT on a related topic: "-the magazine housing which is considered to be the receiver/frame of this firearm is permanently fixed to the tubular housing in which the bolt reciprocates".

It's probably better not to stretch that point too finely...just work with what we have. There's lots of things about these rules that don't make sense, but we know about them already.

I agree about not buggering up a good barrel btw, if you haven't already done it. There's people building SAS3's that could use a barrel. You could always turn out a replica barrel, it doesn't even need to be rifled, and then weld it solidly into the receiver, filling the chamber area up with hard weld.

Tiriaq, where is this from exactly ?

Cantom, no need to weld up the chamber of a replica barrel, just don't chamber it.

It's on the FRT disks produced by the CFC. Not tested by court law though.

The quote is from a FRT entry dealing with a "commercial version" reproduction semi auto Sten type firearm. Have your verifier friend look up FRT # 126520.

True enough. Stencollector's experience getting his SAS version papered is evidence that the powers that be are using this definition. Establishing case law precedence would be a bit of an ordeal. I don't know how a court ruling could be obtained without someone getting charged.
