Sten Guns

With the RCMP running the show now I wonder if it will settle the debate as to what part of a sten is the "receiver", making the manufacture of a semi-auto version a real possibility.

As I promised to stencollector, I'll wait for his call on this as he has pushed this issue further than anyone else I think.

I do agree to say that I am eager to see a semi unrestricted (18 1/2 inches bbled ?) "sten" carbine in my collection. At least I'd be able to shoot this one legally in any rifle range!

By the way stencollector, what would be the shortest bbl length I'd have to use to keep it unrestricted? The tube is in for some length I think. Right?

The tube (receiver) length is 12", so the 18-1/2" barrel would keep it well over 26" and unrestricted.
I've been very busy on a major outdoor project, so the sten project has been idle for a while now. Might be time to check on it's nil status again.

As promised, I won't move a muscle on this one 'til you say we can. It would be totally nutz to risk ruining your efforts by being too much in a hurry to try to get a prototype registered. As I always say: Leave the pros job to the pros! So that's exactly what I'll do.

:D

Oh ... I will probably try to find a nice C/A Mk3 for my next Xmas gift. I'll get in touch to you when I'm ready to buy to see if you have something we could get an agreement on.

I know of a couple of kits that entered the country but to my knowledge there is
only one in the process of being registered.

Check out the Milsurp section over at Canadian Gun Nutz for more info as the guy
doing it is on that board.

It was done about a year ago and the SAS3 was added to
the list of approved firearms... I will try to dig up
the info.

Well, once again, I know for a fact they allowed it. I
have a customer that did it and sent me the proof about
2 years ago. Sten trigger housings have no numbers.
Many mag wells (such as on MK2 guns) do not have the
number either.

I am still waiting to know WHO WHEN and HOW they did it!

Just had a look at the FaRT (3.4-C, Sept. 2005) and could find no entry for the SAS3 or any other commercial semi auto version of the Sten. There were a number of other CVs listed - the various Brownings, MG34s, etc.
The FaRT version used in Ottawa is not the same as the one distributed to volunteer verifiers. There may be a newer listing. For a firearm to be registered, there must be a FaRT number assigned. A phone call to the techs at the CFC in Ottawa should reveal if there is a FaRT number. If a number exists, one of these firearms must have been registered. The other issue is whether a newly made firearm can be registered by an individual, or only by a licenced manufacturer. Past practice has been to accept registration applications from individuals. There appears to have been a change, but whether the change is official, or consistantly applied is anyone's guess. Has any individual member here registered a newly made firearm recently - perhaps a percussion cap muzzleloader, or some other innocuous firearm?
