Well I have made the first plunge into the world of precision fire arms.

I have on order a Remongton 700P LTR in .300 RSAUM.

I am looking at ordering some accessories for it and would like to get some opinions and alternate sugestions to look at. Here are my thoughts;

Jewel HVRTS trigger
I have chose this trigger because it would appear that tension could be changed from a target weight to a hunting weight by changing the springs.

Vortex Viper PST 6-24x50 FFP

Stock
This i would like some feedback on, I have been looking at the AICS stock, but considering the LTR comes in a HS precision stock already, am I further off keeping this stock?

What other accessories should I be looking at to enhance the precision of this rifle.

Please note I intend to shoot this rifle with the factory barrel untill winter and then will send it to get the action blue printed and the barrel replaced.

Thanks in advance for all you input and feel free to be cruel.

Thanks

No cruelty should be said towards you man dont fret. Thats a good set up, try not to over do it too much with accessories etc. Id agree for sure on the AICS stock. Very well made and known for accuracy (and looks) I used to have one but sold it last year. i liked it on my 700. you can do simple things though if you wished. Mystic precision has some amazing options for things to improve your rifle for great prices. I would certainly look at proper bedding for the rifle along with the trigger your going for. Will help a little. the factory barrel will do well, but what exactly are you intending to hit and at what range? is this for competition?

nice glass too. i wanted to get one of those, heard good things. whatever you choose hope it all goes well for you and you have a good hitter.

I have the HS Precision stock on my rifle and really like it, maybe not the best according to some people but it fits me well and the price was right. The Viper PST 6-24X50 FFP is a good choice as well, I have one and really enjoy it, glass is good and tracking is spot on. Your choice of triggers is solid, but I have no personal experience with that brand, just basing what I said solely on reputation.

The biggest thing to add to your list of things is to properly bed the action in the stock. See how the factory barrel shoots after bedding the action and go from there.

Good luck with your new rig, and post some pics and a range report soon!

Well, since you haven't got the gun yet, I guess it makes sense to point out you don't know how much or how little it needs tweaking.

I think if you want to go places, I would put my money on proper reloading with what you have, and then the next big improvement will come from a good barrel. Precision comes from the shooter the ammo and then the equipment. It is probably just me, but I find shooting magnums with heavy bullets makes me eat tylenol better than it makes me hit targets. I reckon you won't need to do much to the gun, just practice with it.

Stuff like triggers and stocks make it feel better, but it won't always shoot better. There are other ways to get the best bang for your buck. - no pun intended.

Very well said. Shooter, ammo, equip

Thanks for the replies guys, this is just the type of feedback I am looking for.

I will be reloading, I have a pretty sweet set up already as I have been reloading black powder and other rifle cartiges for years. This is a large part of the reason I have decided to go with a prcision rifle, too see what I can make it do.

I have already booked the rifle in to be bedded, and the only reason I am waiting on the barrel is Im not prepared to give it up for the length of time anyone seems to need it to do the work, atleast not untill after the fall hunting season.

The reason for this post is to hopefully get feed back from the more experienced members so I can do my research on anything I may have missed or overlooked.

I am a fairly compitant shot and I know this rifle will out shoot me, but thats what I'm looking for. I always demand the best of my equipment so I eliminate the excusses. Afterall if the shooter out shoots the capability of the gun how do you improve!

Thanks to everyone for their input

I wouldn't spend any money on a replacement stock or trigger before finding out how well the rifle shot.

From what Ive been reading about this rifle today, I may like the stock. I was looking at replacing the stock for one reason, I hate what remington has done with their stocks the last couple years, I find the un comfortable and awkward. Based on what Ive been reading about the LTR is that the stock is quite slim and compact, much more my style.

As for the trigger, it just made more sence to me than to spend anything getting the X-mark trigger tuned if I don't think im going to like it. Is it possible or likely that this trigger will preform well straight out of the box?

Mechanically, the HS is a good design. If the ergonomics are satisfatory, use it. Some folks like the ergonomics of the AICS, some don't. Lot of money to spend if the ergonomics are not a great improvement to you. Costs nothing to test drive the HS. Give the trigger a go. I've a lot more experience setting up the old model, so should not give advice about the new one. It will certainly work for testing.

I am using the X Mark trigger in my rifle, it is the last thing left to upgrade and will likely get done later this summer as cash permits. It works okay though, especially for my level of experience and knowledge, the only thing I don't like about it is the adjustment screw is located near the top of the curve on the trigger itself and I find it uncomfortable to use. Other than that it seems to break pretty clean, and it is adjusted down to minimum weight at about 2.5-3 lbs.

If I may make some suggestions:

Bed that stock immediately.

The stock is likely well made, the inletting is likely horrid (like most every aftermarket stock produced). Biggest gains.

I feel strongly about proper stock fit. Like your shoes, bad fit leads to horrid performance. AND I really don't care what fits or what it takes to make it fit. Climb behind this stock and every other stock you can find. Will only take a few seconds to learn what works for your body type and shooting position.

Adjust the Xmark trigger as light as it will go. You may find this good enough. They are seriously hit and miss. I have pulled some that were horrid, a few that were very very nice (heavier pull but crisp and repeatable). Unless you KNOW you want a light pull, why spend the money.

Rifle Basix, Timney, Jewell all make great triggers.

Handload - some factory barrels shoot great

Base and rings - there are several options that work great and don't really cost all that much. Mega dollar accessories here give the least return to your accuracy equation.

If there is one area to invest right away, I would say optics. You can't hit what you can't see. I only use Sightrons now. They are superb scopes and outperform anything in its price point (at least of what is offered in Canada) and gives product twice as expensive sleepless nights.

Good rests and bags really help put this all together.

but the most important thing, is go SHOOT. Lead downrange is the best way to learn this sport.

Enjoy

Jerry
