I really don't know too much about shotguns, but I think I'd like to buy this one:

Make:
Dominion Arms™

Model:
870 Grizzly 12ga

Description:

- Barrel Length 12.5"
- 12 gauge x 3"
- Capacity: 4+1
- Cylinder bore

Price:
$289.00 CAD

Can anyone tell me if this is a good idea for a first shotgun?

I don't have any experience with the Dominion Arms guns, but my first (and only so far) shotgun is a Norinco 14" and it is a great gun! tons of fun to shoot and ammo is cheap. So that would be a yes to a short chinese-made 12ga!

Nobody has one yet, they are supposed to be a direct clone of a Remington 870. I have one on order but only time will tell if it is good or bad. The big question is what do you want to do with your first shotgun. If you want to do most of the normal duck hunting , sporting clays, trap or skeet shooting stuff, it might work but it is limited with the very short barrel, but longer Remington barrels might fit but not having one to interchange barrels I can't say for sure. I am buying mine as a very short bear protection gun for SEARCH AND RESCUE missions on rivers or in areas where bears have been feeding and now we have to be in their area. It has happened twice in the past 6 months. I need something small, light( you still have to carry your regular gear), unobtrusive ( tuck it into the pack when not needed around camp), effective( black bear and grizzly areas) and not too much paperwork( can't really apply for wilderness carry as a business as I am an unpaid professional (volunteer)). Personally I would recommend you check the EE and see if you can get a used Remington Wingmaster 870 in the price range of $200/$250 and then get one of DLASK's $90 18 inch barrels. Then you would have 2 barrels and have a shotgun that can do most any shotgun activity. But if you have same need of a shotgun as I do, this one seems to be the least expensive of the small shotguns, only time will tell if it is a good deal, but that is the same for just about everything new.

It entirely depends on what you are going to do with it. It could be quite useful or utterly worthless, depending. For a single, first shotgun, there are better choices. Bearman's suggestion of a used 870 with an extra barrel or 2 makes a lot of sense.

exactly right guys. if you want it for hunting or clay target it's completely useless. if you want it just to own a short barreled shotgun , well there you go. i'm not familiar with dominion at all.it kinda sounds like a trade name. perhaps something with a 20 to 24" barrel with screw in choke tubes?

Some how I don't think Stephy wants to go duck hunting...but I could be wrong.

Despite what some people think breaking clays with short barrels is just as fun as with a long barrel and not that difficult....if you want to get serious later it's easy to change the barrel.

For the price I'd say it's hard to go wrong unless the gun is a piece of junk which I doubt as the other 870 clones from China have been descent and if a part breaks you should be able to fix it with availlable Remington parts.

If you don't like it I'd say it will be easy to sell for $250 and they way I see it any gun you can buy new and sell for a loss of only $100 bucks is pretty descent.....

well since stephy didn't say what this gun was for, a couple of us kinda covered that possibility that's all.if it's for security and anything else she could do that with 20-24" barrel as well. how many people shoot clays with a 12.5 " barrel.

Not enough
:D

I happen to think that 12.5 is not the best option for clay targets.

That's cool....I just thought I'd cover the possibility that she's not after a hunting setup.

I would if I had one. I do take my 14" 870 out just to remind the local clay crowd that I am somewhat eccentric. :D

IMHO, if you don't have a shotgun and want one to do everything an 870 Express combo with a 28 or 26" vent rib barrel and a 20" rifle sighted slug barrel is a good place to start.

You will probably want a stock with a shorter length of pull. Unless you are a long armed girl. So I would wait until they actually come in and you know that you can install aftermarket 870 stocks easily.

agreed!!

I wouldn't say completely useless unless of course it was in the pistol grip configuration.
There are certainly better shotguns out there for either roles you mention, but then again...

For every inch cut off a 12 gauge barrel from 30" you loose only 6.5 feet per second of velocity with grouse loads...big fat hairy deal.

If you are worried about sight picture with the shorter barrel, then mount a red dot sight, works like a charm.

Oh and install some removable chokes for an adjustable pattern. :D

And as for adjustable stocks...well a knoxx spec ops stock is pretty adjustable. :p

I've had loads of fun busting clays with my Marine Magnum. And it's my go-to gun for bunny hunting. Granted, I don't know how much of a difference 6" less barrel would make in terms of pointability, but I'd expect that with a bit of practice you'd do just fine with one, even if the purists would sneer...

Wow thanks for all the input guys.
Questions answered:
I want a shotgun 'cuz it makes a big boom. :p
I just love the kick a shotgun has, and its badass factor of course.
I probably won't shot it outside of the range.
But I don't want a p.o.s that will break of fall apart is all.
