Not sure how much of a novice Stephy is, but a 12.5" bbl could be a bit hazardous in inexperienced hands no?
I'd think if a shorty is wanted one of the Norinco HP9's in 14" would be a good way to go. Never mind the no namers. Lots on here like the Norincos. She could also go 18".
Stephy, the short barrel shotguns kick like a #####, not to mention the blast. Try one first!

edited to add: Not trying to slag Canada Ammo's product, actually know nothing about it.

Perhaps a good point, Cantom.

It certainly sounds like you've fired shotguns before, Stephy. It also sounds like you've enjoyed it!

Just be aware that as the barrels get shorter, the muzzle blast and recoil become more and more formidable. Let me take a bit more time with suggestions than I did last night.

#1. Everything indicates that the Dominion products will be just fine. I don't know of anyone here that has a problem with CanadaAmmo and the way that they do business. Chinese made 870 copies have been quite well received by most on this forum. That said, I don't think that anyone here actually has a Dominion yet.

#2. You don't know if the stock on the shotgun is appropriate for your stature. If it isn't that won't be much of a problem to fix. You can buy an aftermarket stock (CanAmmo assures us that 870 stuff will fit, and the 870 is the most common shotgun in the world. Literally.) You even have the option of a recoil reducing, adjustable length Knoxx stock. You can buy those from TSE right here in Calgary.

#3. If you haven't fired a shorty before and want to, I think that TSE still has a 14" 12ga. as one of their range guns (not 100% sure on that, so give 'em a call if you like)

As Cantom suggested, you can also get the 14" Norinco from a variety of sponsoring dealers for roughly the same price as the 12.5".

It may be a good idea to do a bit of homework to figure out what length of barrel is right for you...but at the prices that these shotguns are being sold, and the amount of value they hold for resale, your financial worst case scenario isn't all that bad.

Really, for what you want to do, pretty much any old pump will do. There are countless GOOD quality old pump guns out there, with 2-3/4" chambers and fixed Full chokes, that now sit idle due to the 'steel shot blues'. They can be had for a song if you look. Remington, Winchester, Mossberg, etc. No need for the 'tactical' or 'bear defense' specialty guns.
 
Get the 12.5 inch one:D They are great fun and worth the extra kick. I have a vid of mine with 1 1/4oz loads(hard hitting slugs;)) With regular loads they dont kick anywhere near as hard. You'll do fine with a 12.5 inch model. Mines a Rem 870 with a 12.5" barrel and extras but you get the idea.....

I'd go with a 18-20" barrel to start. If you're new to guns get something that's a little more common like an 870, 590, or 1300. Norinco Hp-9 is probably a good place to start seeing as they are inexpensive and you can get short barrels for them if you like.

She should work for CanadaAmmo, because I think she talked me into one as well.Gun people love badass things,:eek: with a big boom.My question without trying to hyjack this thread is : What is the differences to shoot in the various barrel lenghths.Let's say in 2 inch increments from 8 to 20 inches.A lot of people here are unfamiliar with short shotguns, but love their anti-zombie qualities.

The Defender will do the trick for an anti-zombie tool for sure. We could spend all day arguing relative merits of the 870 vs. the Defender vs. the 500 series.

Stephy may or may not have fired a shorty, but I get the feeling that she's after the thrill of the muzzle blast that will cause people two lanes over to flinch...the endorphin rush that pops up as the butt hammers your shoulder as your pump your way through your fifth box of 3" slugs...the sheer :shotgun: factor of a shorty pump.

They may not be any good for trap and skeet, but they sure are a lot of fun at the range. With regard to pricing of shorties, a Dominion or Norc is hard to beat.

Fifth box of 3" slugs out of a short bbl???? Hahaha...I can see that, poor Stephy with a huge bruise on her whole right side...I fired a bunch off in my 14" 870 and after about 10 rds nobody would consent to go near it let alone fire it...maybe some Mastercraft shells...

Fitted with a pachmyer or limbsaver it won't be so bad. I've shot heavy loads out of shorties equipped with that and they were quite tame, no worse at all than a regular length shotgun, maybe less.

With a knoxx stock on it i doubt she'll feel any 'owie' at all. But it's a safe bet it'll rock her world with the noise and the actual gun moving on the anti-recoil system, so she'll still get lots of 'wow' factor from it.
 
Enjoy the new shotgun, I shoot clays with my 18" folder all the time, not really THAT hard once you figure out where your gun hits. Start with light trap loads so you have an idea what the recoil is like, add a Limbsaver recoil pad if you feel you need it. Don't worry about the gun hitting you int he face, it just doesn't happen in real life unless you're really looking for it. Plant your feet, tuck it in nice and tight to your shoulder, lean forward a bit, get a good cheek weld, and you won't get hurt the first time you pull the trigger. BTW: shotguns may not be as accurate on long-legged as rifles, but they sure are a hellovalot of fun ! (in a loud sort of way) :evil:
 
I think it will be a blast to shoot...pardon the pun. I will try to post a range report once I get it. I am looking forward to seeing the size of the ball of fire it spits out the end.
I had looked at the Norincos and the Dlask Barrels before. This I would say is probably about par with the Norinco just shorter. i would have loved to buy a Dlask barrel but then your looking the same kind of money and it just the barrel.
