stepping up from a .270win

223 rem is an upgrade for gopher shooting
243 win is an upgrade for predator hunting
338 win mag is an upgrade for moose/elk/bear
30-30 is an upgrade for deer in thick stuff
7mm STW for open country deer
22lr for cheap plinking
What do you want to upgrade too?

Be wary of light guns with magnum calibres. I use 7mm rem mag but think that a 300 win mag may be a bit better for moose so I had a T3 lite in 300 win mag as well and the recoil was obnoxious. If not out for large bear a 300 win mag allows for more grains of bullet in a nice flat trajectory for moose and elk.

What do .270win buyers 'step up to' after owning one? Seems like many magnum calibers are marginally better, what does it take to make stepping up worth while?

To plainly respond to your question the next step-up would be the 270 Weatherby magnum which is the fastest manufactured in the .277 caliber. The difference between the 270 Win. and 270 Wby. is definitely not marginal. One of the main purposes for magnums is for longer range shooting/hunting so that the bullet will penetrate the big game animal. Magnums are perferred in western Canada than in central or eastern Canada because of ecologial and big game diversity, however there are personal reasons as well.
The 270 Weatherby is a personal choice of mine, however definitely not in a utilitarian firearm.
