Sterling Arms R18 MK3

There has to be SOME obvious lineage between the Mk3 and it's predecessor, the Mk2. It has been determined that Side-Charging is a lineage requirement, just like dual Operating/Guide Rods. To change even more risks not getting a "Child FRT " based on the continuous R18 lineage. The problem is that the RCMP Lab's determinations are subjective and nobody really knows where they will draw the line. If the revised rifle doesn't "qualify" as an R18 anymore, then it runs a much greater risk of being classified as a variant of something prohibited, like say, a SIG MCX...

So, all of that to say, the Side Charging is here to stay, with an aftermarket folding Charging Handle for those who want one.

The rest of your desired enhancements are doable, but would increase production costs. The intent is to provide Canadians with a well-designed, reliable, reasonably accurate and durable sporting/utility rifle under $2K. It is NOT a SIG MCX, although what you propose would bring the Mk3 ever closer to that unknown variant "line". As a utility/sporting rifle, it is not expected nor required to withstand combat. So some compromise was necessary for multiple reasons you can probably deduce for yourself.

Very good take from a practical standpoint.

If Bartok5 you have any influence on the styling of the design, I’d wish they would drop the silly curves up front and just make it squared like everyone else, cleaner looking.
Huh - I honestly hadn't even noticed those curves until you pointed them out. I will pass along your opinion, but I suspect that it will boil down to JR's aesthetic taste. In an ideal world, the Handguard (really, the Barrel Nut) will be HK416 compatible, opening up the options for aftermarket handguards to suit every taste. I think we have the Tool-less Handguard Bolt Removal sorted out now. The remaining question is whether the Barrel Nut will be HK compatible. I know that Mike from SAI was collecting the HK Barrel Nut specifications with a view to ensuring compatibility, but I am not sure where we stand in terms of making that change. The Mk3's Barrel Nut is already the same diameter as the HK Nut, however the placement of the Bolt Groove must be adjusted on the Mk3 to be further away from the Receiver. I say this based on a direct visual comparison and caliper measurements.

Please also remind them of that top rail indexing groove from HK416 that needs to be the right size for compatibility. I’ve got an HK416 quad rail if anyone needs specs.

I appreciate your effort in helping us make this rifle a killer product!!

Hence why I have been saying that sales may be delayed until early in the New Year if there are supply chain issues.....

My guess is that the Longshoremen will be deemed essential and legislated back to work pretty quickly if history repeats with a port strike.

SAI is separate and distinct from TSE. The R18 Mk3 is full steam ahead. We are just waiting on the Canadian subcontractor to provide Bolts that are in specification with proper headspacing so that testing of the 25 pre-production rifles can commence.
