Stevens 200 .223 is it junk??

well today i replaced the standard diameter side spring with a piece of piano wire .039 diameter and while it has improved the weight of pull now it has a noticeable amount of ugly creep and its quite gritty if that makes sense.Breaks ok but im not sure i can live with the creep.I may go with the rifle basix for 85 bucks of their website.
Dan.

So $350 gun, plus $100 trigger and whatever else you add t it, adds to the total price.

I think you are better off just spending a bit more to begin with and get a more quality gun.

But then again, fixing them up is a hobby and I did buy one of those $90 Norinco 780's to tinker with so go away Mr. Black Kettle, Mr Shiny Pot is signing off!

I'm not trying to side-track the Stevens 200 topic, but I'm wondering if anyone has a Weatherby Vanguard Carbine in 223 that they might comment on ?
Some dealers list them for a reasonable price and I wonder how good they are.

I've bought one of the new Vanguard S2. Very nice gun for the price point. IMHO they are quite a step up from the older Vanguards. The older ones are being sold out at some pretty decent prices but the new S2's are better.

I you want a step up from the Stevens it is a good choice as you will not be doing anything to it other than a scope.

So true...I picked up a stevens 200 in .223 from a supporting dealer in here for $329.00,got a trigger from Mystic Precision for just over $100.00 bucks and its set at a very clean crisp 2 pounds...then in the EE i scooped up a red laminate thumbhole stock for $50.00 .The gun shoots 1/2 inch groups all day long.

Sure I could have just bought a vanguard in .223 for about the same price...BUT....when I pull it out for shooting gophers it doesnt look like every one elses rifles and ppl want to try it out.An on top of that...it made a great winter project...I have never ever been pissed off with myself for buying a stevens 200...I rather like them for what they are.

here is a pic of mine. they are fun rifles to play with and build.
