I've got a Stevens 200 in .223 with a staggered magazine and flat (non-coiled) spring. The bolt would often skip over the 2nd and 3rd round and I'd have to rock the follower forward so the bolt would catch the top of the casing. I tried bending the spring in various ways but it only made the problem worse. I've read about a lot of people having this same problem but I've never seen a solution. Does anyone know how to fix this?

The mag lips sound like they are too tight and are pushing the bullets under your bolt. Take the box mag out and find a way to bend them very little. Do it carfully. If you bend them too much then you will have other problems. I find a vice is the best way to do it. get one lip of the mag in the vice and band it just a little and do the same for the other side. It will take some tinkering until you get it right. Both my Stevens needed the mags adjusted. They work great after you find the sweet spot.
