Just got one for $232 at SIR.

Need a scope for it. Any suggestions. I don't want anything expensive. Trying to keep this cheap.

And what about ammo?? Would likely be used for moose only?? Maybe a deer or coyote if the opportunity came.

Hang a Bushnell Elite 3200 or Leupold VX-II 3-9x40mm on it. Should be able to pick up one up on the EE for a reasonable cost.

Be interesting to see what you think about the recoil of that ctg on that platform. Handled a Stevens 200 in .300 Win Mag at the local dealer. Mightly light rifle/barrel I thought....

my ultra on tyhe cheap sniper build is a stevens 200 in 300wm, in the factory stock recoil is brisk but not as jaring as you might think
about on par as a 12g with slugs. with the choate USS stock and the 28" heavy pac nor bbl recoil is cut down nicely

I put a grind to fit limbsaver on my stevens 300wm to replace the hard hockey puck it came with, noticeable improvement. As for a scope it has a bushnell 3200 3x9 on it but am thinking of replacing it with a burris 3x9 with the ballistic plex reticle as the glass looked slightly better.Shoots 1 inch at 100yds with factory federal ammo.Tried a muzzle break for shooting at the range but not needed with the limbsaver now for just hunting.

You can take the pad off, and place a bag of shot inside while shooting at the range. This will add a fair amount of weight and absorb the recoil. Pop the bag out when you take it out hunting.

Put a Mueller 3-10x44 sport dot on mine. $270 after taxes from whitefalls on the board here. Cheaper than a 3200, and I've yet to see a bad review of Mueller, plus the Lifetime Limited Warranty. I haven't shot it yet, so I can't say anything how well it actually does, but I'm sure that the operator will be the biggest limitting factor for my shooting.

I just put a Nikon Prostaff 3-9 on my Stevens and it has been working great. The clarity is fantasic, and the price is right. SIR has them for $200. Plus it has a 30 year warrenty.

I just bought the same gun and am thinking of putting the Nikon Prostaff on it. Was told that it would handle the pounding and was a good value for the money. The comments I have heard about the scope is that it is equal to the 3200 Elite and better than the Leopold Rifleman or VX-1. Any other opinions?

Seeing as no one has put on an ammo reply yet, may I be the first. There are lots of combinations out there, but it boils down to what shoots best in your gun. I shoot 200 grain partitions out of my .300. I cannot cloverleaf, (but am happy with my groupings) and I have not shot a moose yet with it. It does flatten deer, and it would crank a moose as well. Like I said there are lots of options out there and surely lots of people will get back on their "fav" recipe.

I have a Bushnell 3200 as well, and holding the two scopes up side by side the Nikon seems like a clearer image.

I would put a scope with lots of eye relief,,,,Leupold,,,,to avoid being kissed.I have seen new shooters with this rifle cartridge combo recommended to them as their first centerfire and with crappy scopes on top of them,a real nice situation to develop a massive flinch."I was holding dead on when I closed my eyes and pulled the trigger"".Do not skimp on the scope on this combo!

Hey Brent, I`ll keep my eyes open for a scope.

A few questions though,

will you be needing lessons or will I be sighting this rifle in for you, just like your shotgun?

hmm maybe i'll just keep my eyes open for a scope i like instead

Took mine out today, first time shooting a rifle. I shot 40 .3 inch groups at varying distances  It was fun, not as much recoil as some have told me it would be. It's certainly manageable, the scope brushed my glasses a couple times at first. By the end of the day, I was within a couple inches of where I was aiming at 100 yards. I have about a 1 inch bruise on my shoulder and another on my bicep. I enjoyed it, and can see many good times ahead. Was using 165 gr hornady interlock btsp. Saved all the brass, buying a lee anniversary kit in a couple weeks, I'll shoot it a lot more once I get that going and it doesn't cost so much. My goal is to get my shooting upto par with what the gun is capable of, or at least close anyway :)
