ok here is my problem wondering if anyone has experienced this
I have a Stevens 223 that I dropped into an Accustock with AICS compatible bottom metal, short action 4.4 screw spacing, action fit perfectly into stock no issues.
so I ordered an MDT polymer Mag , its a tight fit but with a little sanding it fits the mag well but the problem was that the bullets were sitting to far back or the bolt sits to far forward either way you look at it so the bolt would not pick up the shell just rides over the top. So I took the mag apart and with some creative mods I filled a notch in the mag plate and glued in a small rectangular shim to push the bullets ahead about a 1/4 of an inch, re worked the spring , put it back together and now I have it working and feeding properly. So I decided to try a Cadex metal mag and see if it would be better, ordered one from Bullseye, arrived yesterday, well the mag fits perfectly into the well, no play and it drops free but....same bullet location problem! they sit to far back....so tear apart the mag , fab up a small plastic shim that's tapered all along the back side of the top feed ramp, file the ramp to slide up and down the shim, re bend the top of the mag spring, fiddle with it for about an hour to finally get it to work correctly and now it seems to feed all the rounds ok so what the FFFF. why should I have to seriously mod the factory mags to fit ?? does the Stevens bolt sit a little farther forward then a standard model 10,110 savage bolt ??
I would like to be able to buy a Mag that fits and feeds properly without having to Mod it....
anyone have any ideas ??

Shorten the front baffle . Yours will prob have a leg on the rear of it so shorten the leg. I used a zip disc and then a fine file and emery cloth to polish it up and remove sharp edges and burrs. Make sure the cut is square.
By doing this mod there will be no reason to modify the mag.

will this in any way affect anything else ? will the bolt then fully seat against the back of the shell upon full ####? do I need to readjust anything else ?I know this may be a noob question but I'm still learning about bolt gun builds thanks.

pretty sure there's no leg on mine its just 2 concentric lugs on either side that match the 2 front lugs on the bolt, I cant look at it currently and will have a closer look once I get home but from what I'm seeing online I believe that's the case.

I don't think you understand what mod you need to do and on what part. You can replace the bolt baffle with on from a 308 bolt (it is the shorter one with no leg on the rear of it so it allows the bolt to have more rearward travel. Or maybe take it to a gunsmith if you are unsure of what you are doing.

ive been looking online and I think I fully understand it now , like I say I don't have the bolt in hand currently I'm at work , its at home, and yah I just found a shorter baffle on the brownells website for a long action which doesn't have the side leg as mentioned so I assume that would allow more rearward travel, ill disassemble the bolt tonight , I have a machinist friend who could possibly mill 200 thou off the one I have now and make it work.
but I'm assuming this would also possibly work ? not sure on the thickness though.

Yes check it when you get home. I am sure that if the rifle came from the factory as a 223 or 204 ruger it will have the leg on on baffle and rifle that came as 308 or 7mm-08 did not have the leg on it.

yes its definitely factory I bought the 223 new about 10 years ago, the only part I don't fully understand is once I remove say 200 though from the leg to allow the bolt to retract more what makes up the difference ? will the bolt fully seat back against the chambered round because now it will be 200 thou shorter will it not ??

the only function of the leg on the bolt baffle is to stop the bolt from having more rearward travel . Do not shorten the baffles body but only the leg (if it has one). Google Savage bolt baffle and you will see pics of baffles with the leg and ones without.

The bolt head locking lugs are what lock the bolt shut. When you get home inpsect your bolt and look how it accually works.

Just got home and had a look at the bolt , exactly as you said r204 , looks like an easy mod I’ll just cut the required amount off with a small zip disc and file it nice and flush and remove burrs , easy .
Thanks again and Merry Christmas 🎄

I have a Question for you . did this rifle work properly in the beginning ? as it was originally designed ? then you have a choice you can mess around with an after market mag and a different stock etc etc or you can put it back the way it was and enjoy it . now that's just my opinion . I was given a rifle several years ago and had nothing but problems with it due to the fact buddy had installed and after market mag . well schzam I changed the mag back to the original one and wala it worked like a dream .
