Hi guys, need some advice:

I just purchased a used Stevens 200 in .223 for my first centre fire rifle rig. I am using it for varmits mainly. It's an older stagger feed model. It is completely stock. I tried it our for the first time today and encountered a problem.

I was shooting factory American Eagle 55gr FMJ at the range. After firing the case would not always eject properly. About half of the 40 rds I fired would fall out of the bolt face before clearing the receiver and ejecting. When I cycled unfired rounds every one ejected properly. The problem only presents itself when ejecting fired cases.

Could this be a weak extractor spring? Like I said, the empty cases just seems to fall out of the bolt face before going far enough to eject. I don't think ammo would cause this right?

Any insight would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Giggidy

My 223 stevens did the same. So have a couple of the higher end savages in 223 that I know of. Give savage a call on Monday. They will send you a new spring, detente ball and extractor (if my memory serves). It may look like you are switching like for like but your problems will be solved.

Is there a warranty provider here in Canada to contact or should I just call Savage directly?

I kind of figured the extractor might be out of spec or something.

Call Savage in the US, numbers on the web site, they will put you through to the warranty dept. They seemed to know what I was talking about immediately. I think it took about a week for the parts to arrive in an envelope.

How hard are you pulling the bolt back? I find that you really have to pull it back pretty quickly, not necessarily with alot of force though!

If the brass falls back into the action when you pull the bolt back slowly then you may well have the same problem.

Just an update:

Well I received the new extractor, ball and spring from savage the other day. Install was simple. I went out a blew up a few gophers tonight and she functioned flawlessly.

Thanks for the advice guys!
