stevens 200 magazine jam?

while out for yotes yesterday i noticed my gun making a loud rattling noise but figured it was the sling i had just put on. turns out it was 3 rounds in the magazine shaking around because the bottom plate that pushes them up was stuck. had to use a knife to pry it up and get it to work again.

any ideas how i can fix this so it doesnt happen again? sure would be a piss off if it happened while reloading for a 2nd shot.

Perhaps it just binded? Have you fully loaded the magazine before this? Take everything apart and clean out any crap that may be in there and smooth out the follower if it has any sharp edges on it.
