Stevens 200 modifications

Where did you find instructions for lightening the trigger pull? The page on varminthunters.com seems pretty good, but I'm wondering if there is others. Also, where is a good place to get .041" wire?

+1, in addtion to a source for the .040" wire, what KIND of wire is necessary as you would need a steel that has a good memory and won't bend over time.

Does anyone know?

I have one in and just got one in .:bigHug: The has shot well with a crap scope and the cheapest ammo available. So far I have just lightened the existing trigger.. don't go too light or its dangerous. Havn't tried the yet.
I plan on ordering two Boyd's laminate thumbhole stocks.. They will only ship the unfinished ones to Canada, but its easy to finish them and apparently the fit is pretty good. Its only 69 bucks each plus shipping. My plan is to pillar bed and glass bed them both.. I will have to do some research and get the advise of some fellow CGN' ers for that. (any good links?)
Make sure to check if your gun's mag is straight or staggered feed as it could be either and they require different stocks. Check the action screw spacing too.
Apparently another good stock is the hogue overmolded with the full length aluminum bedding block, if you prefer synthetic and an easy install. It goes for about 200 bucks, they also sell it as just pillar bedded for about half the price.
By adjusting the trigger and adding the boyd stock you have a really nice rifle for an amazing price. Put the savings into a quality scope of at least 300 bucks.

You need a true Spring steel to maintain tension over time and useage.

Unfortunately, it doesn't really do much. I have gone so far as to remove the spring completely and trigger pull did not drop significantly.

to play along at home:ON AN EMPTY CHAMBER, just #### the rifle while holding the trigger forward (remove the spring). Dry fire it and I bet it isn't much different then when the spring is in place at its lightest safe setting.

The geometry of the trigger is the limiting factor. The Timneys use a different geometry and get the pulls way lighter then factory parts ever will.

There were several great posts in the gunsmith forum but I would hate to refer you to the search function. 6mmBR.com has some nice posts too.

I have a new Savage 11 on its way that is non-accutrigger, so want to look into temporary options of reducing the pull until i can spring for an aftermarket.

I just orderd 2 Finished. They were priced at $92 a few weeks ago, $89 now. $25 to ship to Canada, the only kicker is that they have to wait a week before they send you second stock. http://www.boydsgunstocks.com/Thumbhole-Replacement-Stocks-Savage-Stevens-s/36.htm First one showed up in a week, looks awesome, just need to buy the action screw off a savage 110 wood stock rifle and take a tiny bit off wood out for the trigger gaurd to sit flush. Other than that they're perfect.
 
They ship usps. Had $17 in duty and taxes. One thing of note though, I noticed last night that the screws on my 22-250 are out about a ¼ inch out, just took a tiny bit of material off the stock with a dremel. Perfect fit now. :)

Does anyone know if there are varmint/precision stocks for the Stevens available in Canada? The Boyd's stocks seem to be all sporter stocks, but I'm thinking of upgrading the barrel eventually to a heavy barrel, and I don't want to buy a stock that's not compatible.
 
When you upgrade the barrel just wrap a broom stick with some sand paper and have at er. A little bit of elbow grease and your there. ;)
 
I don't have a Stevens left right now but I fixed a couple.

I recommend the RifleBasix trigger. Did wonders for me on one rifle.

Ramline makes reasonably priced stocks that are available but only for some models. If my memory doesn't betray me only for the long action. The other Savage stocks in Ramlines inventory do not fit a Stevens or another Savage with internal mag and short action. The spacing of the screw holes is wrong.

This info may be a bit dated as I sold my last Stevens last year and haven't dealt with this issue in two years.

Model Airplane Shop, or Model Train Hobby Shop.

Tell the clerk you are looking for music wire.

It is hard drawn spring steel wire. It is still soft enough to bend but springy.

Cheap.

If you go to a Machine tool supply place, you may end up looking at having to buy a pound coil off the stuff. Hobby shop music wire is in 36 inch lengths, and fairly straight.
