Hey all. I have a stevens 200 2506 sitting idle with a badly shot out barrel. Its plain stock stevens ugly and that is ugly. The plan was to buy yet another 2506 barrel but a proper one not another take off. However. I got to thinking about a complete make over. New stock new trigger new barrel. New optic new rings new base. The 35 whelen has had my attention but i think i want to keep it under 275 as im in southern ontario
So what ideas can cgn put forth to spice up an old stock 200?

Nothing 6.5 creedmore. If i was going to do a 6.5 id buy a factory rifle and save alot of coin

6.5-06 fast twist, 1-8" or 1-7.5" and you can stay under the .275 cal limit but shoot the heavy up to 156g and 160 gr.

Also consider a fast twist 270 Win you can take advantage of the new heavier Eld,VLD, ABLR type .277 bullets.

I'm also on southern Ontario and been thinking about a similar build. One gun from yotes to moose and bear. Do you plan on doing the work yourself or have a smith in mind?

Your 25-06 designation should serve well enough for the Ont three (Bear, Deer & Moose). It also keeps you under the S.Ont cal restriction.

Unfortunately there's not many stock options readily avail for the 200. A Boyds Laminate might be your only option.

So if it was me and I was keeping the Action, Stock & Caliber;

JC Cutoms Barrel in 25-06 in either a #2 or #3 profile - $600
Trigger Tech - $250'ish (??)
Barrel removal, install of new Barrel and Bedded by a Smith $2-$$400

So say, $1200 roughly give or take

Or you could sell the action/barrel combo at $3-$400 on the EE due to the barrel wear and look into a completely new rig. Something along the lines of a Browning Hells Canyon Speed or comparable in whatever Cal (25-06, 270, 7mm-08 etc) you desire.

Plenty of stock options available for the 200. It's a savage 110 action.

Actually MDT is probably the best choice, as the Stevens normally has 4.275” action screw spacing, which is the old Savage 10 spacing. Most aftermarket Savage stocks come with the 4.400” action screw spacing. MDT are about the only ones I’ve found with the little adapter, so that you can use either length screw spacing.

I personally would not put $1200 into a Stevens action. That would be like putting mag wheels on a K Car. I've BTDT with a couple Sportsman 78 actions.

That $1200 would be much better spent on a T3 in the chambering of your choice. It would be a whole lot easier, be very accurate and you'd retain more value in the gun you now own.

Aww c'mon dude we can pimp this K-Car... I mean seriously, some nice rims, hang some fuzzy dice, drop it down a few inches, big subwoofer kicking out some beats, roll up, fling open the door to hear that 80's trade mark Chrysler Your door is ajar" warning? What's not to like ;) :dancingbanana:

In all seriousness It's also why I added the sell the action and start new at the end of that post.

Wasn't about to assume or critique the OP's reasoning on keeping the 200 action, so I threw out some options/ideas based on if they were keeping it and their original posts train of thought.

Reality is... On one hand some folk like tinkering and dont mind the $$ being spent, purely for the challenge.

Others just say its not for them and start from the ground up. To each their own

In the end it's all good regardless of what the OP decides. They just asked for our thoughts & opinions on their scenario.

I have a nightforce on a rem 783 so ya ill pimp the k car.
I dont mind the old stevens action and i own it. It needs another barrel regardless. Im already ahead of the guy that would buy it to start a build
Tikka stocks tend to not fit me well so id have to change out the stock and im not a fan of the one action size fits all. Plus the cartridges im most interested in arent found in the tikka line up. 250savage. 2506. 257 wby. 35 whelen being my top choices. If i go with the 35 whelen ill buy a new vanguard in 257wby if i go with another 2506 barrel ill buy or build a mid bore
The benefit of the stevens action is i can do everything myself using prefit barrels

Try a 6mm-06AI for schits and giggles. Be a real sizzler!

Wish I bought a few Stevens 200s when they were like 250 bucks!

Ain't that the truth! My 200 30-06 shot the light out with the first load I tested, cheapo trigger and tupperware stock be damned! Still wish I had bought one in 22-250 or even 223.

I agree with the 6.5-06 or fast twist 270 and leave it otherwise stock. It would make a dandy little rifle for what it is.

back when they were $219 from WSS I got a 22-250 and a 25-06, never did use the 25-06 as I had one in a Tikka, then somewhere down the road I picked up a second one in 22-250 so one of them was turned into franken gun, Savage 10 stock with detachable mag and a Model 12 heavy stainless barrel.

the other 2 I ended up trading them along with a savage 110 in 300WM and a win 94 for a truck :)

I wish I had bought a few more stevens 200 at those prices. I suspect Savage discontinued them as they were hurting their sales of all the 10/110 rifles.
