I bought a Stevens 200 in 270 and customized the stock for a small shooter. Now I would like to sell the rifle and keep the stock. Will a short action fit in the same stock as the long action?
I am guessing no...

Not likely.....long action stock should be longer in the action inletting.....unless ofd course Savage/Stevens uses a long action for everything and just blocks the mag for short action length cartridges.....

I was buliding a rifle for my wife, I have chopped the stock, installed a Limbsaver pad and a Mercury recoil reducer... I just wish I had bought a smaller caliber to start with. I have yet to fire this gun, it might be ok, I think SA would be better though.

Why can't you load moderate loads using the 130gr bullet? Try for the 130gr at 2600fps. That recoil level is equal or less then the 260,7-08 and way less then a full 308 - 165gr load.

Visit hodgdon and look for their junior/reduced loads using H4895. more then enough to kill any grass eater at moderate hunting ranges and surprisingly accurate.

that way when experience and need grows, just add more powder and a heavier bullet. Voila!!!

If concerned about penetration, go with a barnes or partition in the 130gr. I really don't think any grass eater will complain that they weren't killed enough.

Personally, I would load with a 130gr Hornady interlock or SST at these lower velocities and be good out to 300yds!

I was planning on doing just that. I haven't looked into the loads yet (nor do i reload) but I have access to all the equipment.

A 243 or 7mm-08 is what I figured you were thinking of replacing the rifle with. Jerry's idea is much better.

27gr of H4895 and work up to a max of 45 gr for the 130gr projectile. The Mrs. can decide the power level. H4895 youth data is 60% of max charge for H4895. Its as simple as it sounds.

Cheers

Thanks Rob.

bill, The 7.62X39 pushes a 123gr bullet around 2300fps and no issue dropping grass eaters as far as one would hunt with a 30-30. This just gives you a frame of reference for recoil.

I am sure your wife would have no issue shooting an SKS. A bit more push in a reduced load 270 with a good recoil pad should be no problem.

Try it, you may just shoot the same load.
