That's the problem, you sold your project. Don't build a project to sell it, you'll never get your money back. I'm sure a Stevens 200 with a Shilen barrel and a Boyd's stock in whatever caliber and twist rate you choose would be a fine shooter, (with a little trigger work. ).

Would he like to sell that 243 barrel? I'm assuming there are not many down the pipe.

He may be selling it in the near future to make room in the safe, though it will probably be the whole gun as he has no intention of "rebarreling". That would be like trying to make honey out of dog sh*t.

EXACTLY... Don't make me get Mystic in here to tell you the Stevens is an EXCELLENT platform to build a fine shooter off of.

Projects are meant to be built and kept.

Mine's currently sitting in a Boyds' Prairie Hunter Pepper Laminate stock.

There's a 24" Shilen SS Match #S8 Savage Bull contour with a 1:8 twist being made for it as we speak.

When it's done, it will put $750 guns (with no optics, and they all come with crappy stocks) to shame. I'll have built my sub MOA rig, with a decent "beginners" optic for $1000.

Amen to this. It's no different that all the different "working-man's guns" of yesteryear. The name of the game isn't price, but value. And the Stevens 200 knocks everything out of the park in that regard..........

I have owned at least a half-dozen of the Stevens, and the same of the Marlins. Still own some of both. The Marlins are almost the same price, equally accurate, even better quality, and have a real recoil pad!

Ok. You got me on those. However, I have handled the 3 "upper tier" rifles I mentioned. I have yet to see a Marlin XL/XS7, so I can't possibly comment on those.

Although, I don't see a pile of people starting threads about their deuced-out Marlins. Are they this rare everywhere, or am I in a backwater part of the world to not see any of them? If any of my local gun shops had one, I'd love to check it out.

They also have a very fine adjustable trigger, which the Stevens does not.

I was surprised by the later Savage 111 package rifle, the recoil pad is much improved as is the detachable magazine system. The stock is not nearly as bad or ugly as the stevens.

Unfortunately the trigger still leaves to be desired. Ill give the Marlin the edge on that one.

Personally I love my Stevens 200 in .243win I too gave it a paint job and bedded the action and its a gun that will shoot minute of coyote all the way out to 600yds no problem. It might go further but 600yds is the furthest I've shot. Here's a pic of it and also a video of it shooting at 550yds at my 12" gong. I hit the gong 4 times before we started filming through the spotting scope.
