well i guess im buying a stevens 200 in .270 to use on everything from crows to moose. i was thinking bushnell or mueller.

cant decide which model and what power i need. what i really want is something that goes from 2.5x-18 but that isnt realistic. mueller has a 4x16 that looks alright.

is 4x too powerful for hunting in the bush where the odd shot might be 30 yards or less? longest shot might be about 350yards so i need something to cover short and long range.

lets say there is a groundhog at 300 yards. what is the minimum power i would need to nail him? i still have 20 year old eyes;)

3-9 is a great choice,3 or 4 power are ok for short shots.I like a 2-7 for the closer stuff but the 270 can reach out there and a bit more mag helps.I noticed a big difference in the picture with my leupold on 12x versus my older scope on 9x for longer shot. That was shots on paper mind you and deer are alot bigger than little orange or black dots!

well i want to get a scope now that is good for short as well as long ranges. might start reloading next year so ill want the higher power for paper punching.

can anyone guess what the minimum power is to be able to see a crow or groundhog good enough at 300 yards to be able to hit it?

12 power should give you a decent view,my 9x would be very marginal.Higher end 9x might be ok.my 7x leupold would not be good at least with my eyes.At least for a good view of it.I saw a guy at the range that could hit 2L bottles at 300 m fairly consistantly with peep sights on a shilo sharps 45-70,he could not see the bottle and was just told what part of the sheet of ply wood to aim at.,Mind you he could also hit a 8" gong at 100 yards offhand pretty much every time with the same gun.

I shot a crow at 270 yards 2 weekends ago with my 243 using a baush and lomb 3000 3x9. If you can put the crosshair on the target your ok to go. I beleive also that 9x is enough for paper punching, just get the right targets...
I'm not a long range master but i don't think i'm mystaken if I say some people use 10x to shoot 600 yards and even 1000 yards.

I think your better paying for quality glass than for higher magnification...IMHO

A Weaver K4 is a great scope, with good optics, as is the K6. Supposedly Simmons and Redfield are coming out with some competatively priced new scopes too.

What Bartell said.

If it is going to be used as a varmit rifle some of the time and a big game rifle the rest of the time the 4-12 is nice to have.

And do your self a favor and stick with a 40mm objective. The 50 is just to big and klunky to pack around all the time.

Well, if your budget is Stevens 200 a Leupold is maybe out of your price range but the Bushnell Elite 3200 3-9X40 is a great scope that will suit your needs from close range out to 300.
If it's not about budget and just the fact that "the Stevens is a great shooter so why spend more?" then go for a Leup.
From there, it's up to you to put it in the boiler room. ;)

I dont' see much need to put more than a 3-9 on a 270, but if youmust then the 4-12 isn't a bad choice.

SInce the Stevens is a economy rifle, maybe a decent economy scope like the 3200 is a good choice.

FWIW, I soped both my Stevens (.223 and 30-06) with 3-9 scopes, a B&L 3000 and a Bushnell Scopecief, but they are scopes that I just had lying about, anyway!;)

On my Stevens 200 (30-06) I have a 1.5-4.5x40mm Bausch and Lomb 3000. It's perfect!!!!! I think you don't need anything higher (magnification) for hunting large game. I group under 2" @ 200yards no problem and would be comfortable taking a 300yard shot anytime.... A lower mag. scope will give you a larger Field of view and better eye relief, there's no messing around when you need to take a quick shot. On the other hand if you plan on shooting crows.... you'll need something like a 3-9x or higher....

+2 on the Weaver K series... have a K6 on my Savage. Awesome for the money, held zero for almost 2 years now

I will also vote for a 4-12X40 ... if you want to stay around 300 bucks check out the Rifleman... http://www.leupold.com/products/products_highlights.asp
Or if you want really good quality you can step up to a VXII in a 4-12 for the 500 dollar range.... http://www.leupold.com/products/products_highlights.asp

That .270 stevens is very light and it is going to recoil smartly with the heavier bullets and if you are going to be smoking varmints from a prone position... this calls for some eye relief... stick with a long eye relief scope like the Luepold or the Burris. The Fullfield II's are also excellent value!

how much will the 270 kick? only centerfires i have shot are .223, 22-250, 243 and .303 british. cant be any worse than 12g 3 1/2" 00 buck can it?

im thinking of banner, 3200 or rifleman. i was thinking of a mueller 4x16 but then i saw it was over 20oz's...little heavy.

definatly going to be a 40mm. just cant decide if i need AO or not.

It is a very light weight magnum rifle.... it is going to kick!
It will not punish you like a like shotgun with magnum loads but you don't have a scope on your shotgun and you rarely shoot a shotgun from a bench!
I had a Bushnell 3200 on my Tikka in 270WSM it was definitely not enough eye relief when shooting prone or off the bench. It now wears a Leupold VXIII.
