Well I thought I was going to get my hands on a Savage Model 12BVSS in 22-250 to start my 500-600 yd varmint/target rifle, but it's a no go. Now I'm thinking Stevens in a 243 or 22-250 to start off and replace the trigger, barrel and stock over time. Thought a 6BR would be a nice caliber. What do some of you think?

It'll work, but if the plan is the replace everyting but the action, I might encourage you to expand your horizons a bit. If you want to find after market accessories easily, a Remington would be a better choice.

In the mean time, a $350 Stevens will shoot just as well as a $1500 off-the-shelf rifle.

Can offer you most of the components you are looking for.

I really enjoy using the Stevens as a base for building precision rifles. They can shoot extremely well with a good barrel.

The 6BR is a wonderful target cartridge and seem to thrive on 105/108gr match bullets like those from Berger. However, for high volume plinking/varminting, it is expensive due to high brass costs.

Here the 22/250 is less money. A fast twist 223 even more economical.

Just depends on what you want to do. Nice part is with the Stevens or Savage, you can swap parts/barrels to suit whatever shooting you want.

Send me a PM if you want to discuss parts, etc.

It wouldn't be a high volume shooter as I have 4 other varmint rifles. I guess what I'm getting at is I would like to try long range shooting without breaking the bank and I like to do alot of the work myself and in the end if long range shooting isnt my bag I'd have a really good varminter that I could swap calibers on for fun. Sound resonable?

:dancingbanana:Ordered the Stevens today (243) Wholesale mail order still had them for 309.95, best part is I got 350.00 worth of gift certificates for my birthday last week. I'm thinking of a 6br barrel come spring.
